Background: Our aim was to compare the clinical efficacy of the Tannenbaum (TB) biliary prostheses, a recently designed Teflon stent without side holes, with the Cotton-Huibregtse (CH) polyethylene stent.
Methods: Fifty-seven patients (26 men, mean age 75.5 years) with unresectable malignant tumors and distal biliary stenosis were included (38 pancreatic head cancer, 17 cholangiocarcinoma, 2 ampullary cancer).
Background: Hydromer-coated polyurethane stents (HCPS) have a low coefficient of friction that may reduce sludge formation and potentially increase stent longevity.
Methods: Eighty-three patients (39 men, mean age 69.3 years) with malignant mid or distal bile duct strictures were prospectively randomized to receive either 10F HCPS (n = 40) or standard polyethylene stents (n = 43).
Background And Objective: Based on our preliminary experience, we have further evaluated the capacity of the paclitaxel/epirubicin combination (at the dose of 175 and 90 mg/m(2), respectively) plus G-CSF to mobilize hematopoietic progenitors into the circulation.
Design And Methods: The study was conducted in a homogeneous cohort of 25 stage IV breast cancer patients showing response to three cycles of the same chemotherapy regimen and who were included in a high-dose chemotherapy program.
Results: In most cases (68%) more than 5_10(6) CD34+ cells/kg b.
Background/objectives: The prognosis of resectable high risk breast cancer (BC) patients (N+ > 10) is poor with a five-year disease-free survival (DFS) after standard adjuvant ADM/CMF chemotherapy (CT) of about 40%. An improvement in survival has been reported when high-dose chemotherapy with autologous stem cell support is given. It has been recently suggested that nodal status and the degree of pathological remission following preoperative CT administered in patients harbouring tumors larger than 3 cm represent the most important prognostic factors for DFS.

It has, however, recently been shown that almost half of the platelet TO-signal is derived from the labelling of dense-granule nucleotides. It is therefore possible that the higher TO fluorescence of young platelets partially derives from the higher granule content due to their larger volume.

In 35-day-old bcl-2 knockout mice that are growth retarded or 'dwarfed'. the proliferative zone of the growth plate appeared slightly thinner and the secondary centres of ossification less well developed than their age-matched wild-type controls.

Background: We evaluated the infusion-related toxicity of cryopreserved autologous circulating progenitor cells transplanted in 22 patients receiving high dose chemotherapy and stem cells transplantation for malignancy.
Materials And Methods: Progenitor cells were collected following mobilization with chemotherapy plus filgrastim and stored in liquid nitrogen in the presence of 10% dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO). Before infusion of the graft, patients were medicated with mannitol, hydrocortisone and clorphenamine.
We have evaluated the combination of ifosfamide, carboplatin and etoposide (ICE regimen) along with mesna in 26 previously untreated patients with non small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Thirteen stage III B and 13 stage IV patients received intermediate doses of ifosfamide (1000 mg/m2), carboplatin (120 mg/m2) and etoposide (120 mg/m2) given intravenously on day 1 to 3 every 4 weeks. Except for one patient who experienced grade 3 transient thrombocytopenia no major events of hematological or systemic toxicity were observed.

We have compared the specificity and sensitivity of the recently developed 'one tube' reverse transcriptase PCR (RT-PCR) assay with the more widely used nested RT-PCR method for detection of cytokeratin 19 (CK19)-positive cells. The analysis of 30 control samples provides evidence that one tube RT-PCR is highly specific in contrast to the nested method which showed 23% false positive results.

Objective: To determine the incidence and clinical characteristics at presentation of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in a defined area of north Italy.
Design: A 4-year prospective population-based epidemiological study.
Setting: An area in Lombardia defined by the National Health Service scheme with about 294,000 inhabitants, two referral hospitals and 259 general practitioners (GPs).

Graomys griseoflavus is a South American phyllotine rodent widespread in Argentina that shows a high frequency of Robertsonian fusions (RFs). DNA restriction with EcoRI produced a 250-bp repeated family (EG250) specific for the genus. Southern hybridization and sequencing analysis indicate that the EG250 family is heterogeneous, comprising at least two subfamilies.

They have potential usefulness in a range of clinical conditions including the treatment of patients with myelosuppression induced by chemotherapy. Among HGFs, Stem Cell Factor (SCF) and Interleukin 6 (IL-6) are attracting interest for their capacity to stimulate early hematopoietic progenitors.

Southern hybridizations, using camel restriction fragments as probes, indicated that satellite DNAs in all camelids examined have been conserved since the last common ancestor about 5-10 MY ago. The hybridization profiles, however, varied from totally identical (MspI-sat) to highly differentiated (PstI-sat and EcoRI-sat) between Old and New World species.

Hence its use in combination with a vasoactive drug such as terlipressin might improve the performance of this drug in controlling variceal bleeding. The aim of this trial was to compare the efficacy of desmopressin plus terlipressin with that of terlipressin alone in controlling acute variceal hemorrhage.

One-hundred-and-nine of 141 patients with the endoscopic-bioptic diagnosis of moderate or severe dysplasia had an adequate follow-up and were included into the study. After revision of the initial slides by a gastrointestinal pathologist, 57 patients whose lesions did not meet the histological criteria for dysplasia were excluded, being reclassified as hyperplastic or metaplastic lesions (group 2).

In the present study, 106 cirrhotics were randomized to sclerotherapy (55 patients) or control group (51 patients). The management of gastro-oesophageal reflux still presents a considerable problem mostly because of its multifactorial pathogenesis. In this study, we tested the response to treatment with famotidine for 8 weeks in patients with reflux oesophagitis, taking into consideration, however, only cases with pathological gastro-oesophageal reflux of the acidic type. All the patients participating in the multicentre study underwent gastro-oesophageal 24-hr pH-metry.

The present study was set up to evaluate the efficacy of hyperimmune anti-CMV immunoglobulins (IVIG) in the prophylaxis of CMV infection in five patients suffering from dilatative myocardiopathy and submitted to hearth transplant. Different commercial IVIG were tested for anti-CMV neutralizing antibodies before administrated them to patients; the lots immunochemically prepared by PEG resulted to have the highest anti-CMV titer. IVIG treatment, when administered at high doses and at closes intervals of time, proved able to prevent and control CMV infections; when treatment was stopped, a primary infection occurred, easily controlled by short courses of DHPG.

The study population included 40 patients with cirrhosis and portal hypertension referred to our department from October 1984 to March 1988. These patients were drawn from a pool of 173 patients who underwent either elective surgery or endoscopic sclerotherapy during this time.

The patients observed all lived in the Lombardy region of Italy, which is not located on the Mediterranean Basin. Our data show the highest prevalence of the disease, as reported by other authors, in southern regions of Italy, in the same years: 1979-1983.

We studied in vitro the fecal bacterial growth, acid and gas formation in presence of lactitol (beta-galactoside-sorbitol) and neomycin alone or in combination. The results indicate that neomycin only inhibits the growth of susceptible bacteria (E.

We employed the plasma-exchange, at the beginning of immunosubstitutive treatment, to provide a high serum concentration of all classes of immunoglobulins and to better control the patient's state of shock. Intravenous immunoglobulins and Amphotericin B were also given in combination with plasma-exchange, having a synergic therapeutic effect.
