Luminance is the fundamental photometric quantity representing the technical meaning of brightness. It is usually measured from a distance using a matrix sensor, which is the basis of the professional instrument. However, specific technical requirements must be fulfilled to achieve accurate results.

Zoos and aquariums accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums embrace animal welfare as a foundational principle of habitat design. Modern habitats are designed to provide animals with choices and agency over their environment, and to encourage species-appropriate behavior and space use. In 2016, the Detroit Zoological Society opened the Polk Penguin Conservation Center, a 3065.

Introduction: Mother's own breast milk (MOM) is the optimal nutrition for preterm infants as it reduces the incidence of key neonatal morbidities and improves long-term outcomes. However, MOM shortfall is common and either preterm formula or pasteurised donor human milk (DHM) may be used, although practice varies widely. Limited data suggest that the use of DHM may impact maternal beliefs and behaviours and therefore breastfeeding rates.

Objective: The beginning of college is a period in which increased alcohol use often coincides with greater involvement in romantic relationships. Existing literature yields inconsistent findings regarding the influence of relationship types on drinking behavior, perhaps because these studies have not accounted for recent changes in the way college students engage in dating/sexual relationships.

Methods: The present study sought to address this issue using a longitudinal study design by examining the effects of both relationship type and sexual activity on heavy episodic drinking (HED) among 1,847 college students over the course of the first 3 semesters of college.

Probiotic administration to preterm infants is not universal despite randomised trial data from >10,000 infants, significant observational data and multiple meta-analyses. Advocates point to reductions in necrotising enterocolitis and sepsis, 'sceptics' hold concerns over data quality/interpretation or risks. Issues revolve around different products, primary outcomes, uncertain dosing strategies and individual large 'negative' trials alongside probiotic associated sepsis and quality control concerns.

Aims: To compare the screening capability of ultrasonography in detecting trisomy 13 (T13) using a multiparameter sonographic protocol (NT+) with a classical combined screening test (CST) protocol.

Methods: The project was a prospective, multicenter study based on a nonselected mixed-risk population of women referred for a first-trimester screening examination. Each subject was offered a choice between either the gold standard, traditional combined screening test (CSG arm) or the ultrasound-based screening protocol (USG arm).

Necrotising enterocolitis (NEC) is a devastating disease with significant mortality and serious adverse outcomes in at least 50% including short gut and poor neurodevelopment. Research and management are complicated by a lack of robust clinical markers, and without histological confirmation, there is a risk of both underdiagnosis and overdiagnosis. Interunit variations in the thresholds for surgical referral, laparotomy and postmortem rates mean the actual incidence is difficult to determine, especially because the histological term 'NEC' is used in practice to describe a heterogeneous clinical syndrome.

The results of studies conducted by means of complementary methods, differential scanning calorimetry, transmitted light intensity measurements, polarized optical microscopy, the electro-optical method, as well as dielectric relaxation spectroscopy of two new liquid crystal mixtures are presented. The first mixture is an equimolecular binary mixture consisting of two ferroelectric chiral liquid crystals from the homologous series, abbreviated as (S)-MHOBSn. The second mixture is a multicomponent mixture and consists of four mesogens from the homologous series of nOS5 as the base of the mixture, abbreviated as 610712 and chiral MHOBS8.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to compare the effectiveness of a combined screening test and an ultrasound-based method for detecting trisomy 18 (T18) in pregnant women, particularly looking at different cutoffs and age factors.
  • - Conducted with over 10,800 pregnancies, the findings showed that the ultrasound method had a 100% detection rate for T18, while the combined screening method had an 86% detection rate at a 3% false-positive rate.
  • - The results indicated that the ultrasound screening was more consistent across various maternal age groups, making it a preferable option over the combined screening method for T18 detection.

Purpose Of Review: The increasing recognition of the role of nutritional care for preterm infants continues to result in a proliferation of review articles, systematic reviews, observational studies and trials. In this article, we review a selection of important studies published in the last 12–18 months.

Recent Findings: The selected studies demonstrate the potential importance of light protecting parenteral nutrition solutions, the benefits of standardized concentrated parenteral nutrition solutions and the importance of insulin-like growth factor I in early life.

Purpose Of Review: Few areas in neonatal medicine have generated as much discussion and controversy as the use of prophylactic probiotics for the prevention of necrotizing enterocolitis. We summarize recent studies from the last 1-2 years.

Recent Findings: Systematic reviews show that probiotics reduce the risk of necrotizing enterocolitis but there are methodological limitations to all the published trials, and the largest trial to date is at odds with the conclusions of the meta-analyses.

The introduction of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) for lighting necessitated a completely new quality in the construction of luminaires. The different production technology required new methods and designing tools. It also challenged designers with new problems to solve.

The polymorphism of resorcinol has been complementary studied by combining Raman, time-domain terahertz, and inelastic neutron scattering spectroscopy with modern solid-state density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The spectral differences, emerging from the temperature-induced structural phase transition, have been successfully interpreted with an emphasis on the low-wavenumber range. The given interpretation is based on the plane-wave DFT computations, providing an excellent overall reproduction of both wavenumbers and intensities and revealing the source of the observed spectral differences.

Background: There is consistent evidence that the binge drinking standard of 5+ drinks per drinking occasion for men (4+ for women) is associated with risk for negative consequences. Yet, many have questioned the adequacy of this measure as an index of intoxication (e.g.

The complementary studies of the mesomorphic properties of a novel antiferroelectric liquid crystal (AFLC) (S)-2-octile 4-S-(4'decyloxybiphenyl-4-tiocarboxy)benzoate, known under MHPSBO10 acronym have been undertaken. The polymorphism has been complementary studied in details by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Transmitted Light Intensity (TLI) and Polarization Microscopy (POM). The switching characteristics along with multiple macroscopic parameters describing the mesomorphic properties were determined by using electro-optic measurements, both upon cooling and heating.

The experimental and theoretical vibrational spectroscopic study of one of a novel antiferroelectric liquid crystals (AFLC), known under the MHPSBO10 acronym, have been undertaken. The interpretation of both FT-IR and FT-Raman spectra was focused mainly on the solid-state data. To analyze the experimental results along with the molecular properties, density functional theory (DFT) computations were performed using several modern theoretical approaches.

The impact of late terminations (> or = 24 weeks) on the overall stillbirth rate was determined for the 12-year period from 1994 to 2005 using data collected by the Regional Maternity Survey Office in the north of England. It is a legal requirement to register late terminations, and this may lead to an overestimation of the true stillbirth rate. In our region, terminations resulting in stillbirth increased the registered stillbirth rate by nearly 10%.

A method of determining the set of four order parameters S , D , P , and C for a ferroelectric liquid crystal, using complementary results for different sample geometries, is presented. IR measurements have been performed for homeotropic, planar heterogeneous and, planar homogenous sample geometries. Orientational order parameters were determined in two frames of reference to obtain complete information on molecular arrangement.
