Inverse planning in Gamma Knife radiosurgery: A comparative planning study.

Purpose: To determine the advantages of inverse planning using a prerelease version of Leksell Gamma Knife® (LGK) Lightning (Elekta AB, Sweden) compared to manual forward planning.

Methods: Thirty-eight patients with metastases (MET, n = 15), vestibular schwannomas (VS, n = 11) and meningiomas (MEN, n = 12), treated with LGK Icon™ at our institution, were analyzed retrospectively. For each case, an inverse (inv) and inverse full coverage (fc) treatment plan was generated using LGK Lightning and compared to the clinical plans.

The Impact of a Simplified Hydrostatic Bypass Flow Technique on Error Detection during Surgical Limb Revascularization.

Technical errors have an impact on the results of surgical lower limb revascularization. Use of ultrasound scanning or angiography on the operating table is inconvenient and, in case of angiography, carries a certain risk of radiation and contrast exposure. A simpler method of screening for errors is required.

The results of 394 consecutive cases of knee joint radiation synovectomy (radiosynoviorthesis) using Y.

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the treatment results of Y radiation synovectomy for chronic exudative synovitis of knee joints.

Methods: The retrospective data consist of 394 consecutive knee radiation synovectomies performed using 6 mCi (222 MBq) of Y. The assessment included 3-point custom pain and joint mobility scale, evaluation of joint's circumference, binary joint's temperature evaluation, patellar ballottement test, indications for puncture and its volume in applicable cases.

Bone marrow harvest in donors with anaemia.

Background: Bone marrow harvest (BMH) for haematopoietic stem cell transplantation is a well-established procedure. The guidelines of World Marrow Donor Association provide information on donor selection. However, some of the guidelines regarding donors with anaemia prior to harvest lack in supporting data from clinical studies.

The role of neck wrinkles for cosmetic effect during carotid artery endarterectomy.

Introduction: Minimally invasive procedures in carotid endarterectomy are currently preferred. Smaller skin incisions (transverse or longitudinal) and the mapping of carotid artery bifurcation with Doppler ultrasound are promoted. There is a lack of papers about cosmetic effects and patients' preferences.

Point defects as a test ground for the local density approximation +U theory: Mn, Fe, and V(Ga) in GaN.

Electronic structure of the Mn and Fe ions and of the gallium vacancy V(Ga) in GaN was analysed within the GGA + U approach. First, the +U term was treated as a free parameter, and applied to p(N), d(Mn), and d(Fe). The band gap of GaN is reproduced for U(N) ≈ 4 eV.

[The treatment of the displaced fractures of the radial head with open reduction and internal fixation using Herbert screws].

The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the results following open reduction and internal fixation of fractures of the radial head with the Herbert screws. 18 patients had been treated from 2001 to 2005, 10 men and 8 females with an average age of 39 years and 6 months (range, twenty to fifty six years).
