Article Synopsis
  • The systematic review evaluated how periodontal therapy affects inflammation and oxidative stress markers in type 2 diabetes patients with periodontitis.
  • Reviews of 1,062 studies identified 14 eligible trials with 1,223 participants, showing moderate-quality evidence that periodontal treatment lowers c-reactive protein levels, a marker of inflammation, particularly notable in smokers.
  • The findings suggest that non-surgical periodontal therapy can reduce systemic inflammation in T2DM patients, potentially lowering risks for other serious conditions like cardiovascular disease.

Background: Mesenchymal stem cell infusion and vitamin D supplementation may have immunomodulatory actions that could prolong the preservation of residual insulin secretion in patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D). Intervention with these agents after onset of T1D could favor the development of a remission phase, with potential clinical impact. We aimed to compare the presence of clinical remission (CR), glycemic control and daily insulin requirement at 6, 12, 18, 24 and 36 months after the diagnosis of T1D using IDAA1c in patients who received therapy with adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cell (ASC) infusion and vitamin D supplementation and a control group.

Congenital malformations are more frequently found among children born to mothers with diabetes than in the background population. There are several complex mechanisms involved in the development of congenital malformations in the offspring of mothers with hyperglycemia, such as the overexpression of glucose transporters (GLUTs) 1 and 2, the increased activity of the hexosamine biosynthetic pathway and the reduced expression of the PAX3 gene with a consequent increase in p53 protein expression. These alterations can lead to increased glucose and free radical concentrations in the embryo, thus promoting the process of apoptosis and causing malformation.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the impact of the carbohydrate counting method (CCM) on blood sugar control and pregnancy outcomes among women with pregestational diabetes.
  • In a nonrandomized controlled trial involving 89 pregnant women, those using CCM showed better results in reducing fasting and postprandial blood glucose compared to those using the traditional method (TM), particularly in the second and third trimesters.
  • Despite both methods helping to improve postprandial blood glucose levels, no significant differences were found in maternal or perinatal outcomes, though cesarean deliveries were common and linked to hypertensive disorders.
