Article Synopsis
- Southeast Asian ovalocytosis (SAO) is a red blood cell abnormality linked to a genetic deletion in the band 3 protein gene, prevalent in malaria-prone areas.
- Researchers studied the occurrence of SAO in 22 patients with distal renal tubular acidosis (dRTA) and 50 healthy individuals in Malaysia.
- The results showed a significantly higher incidence of SAO in dRTA patients (81.8%) compared to healthy controls (4%), suggesting a dysfunction of the band 3 protein in dRTA development.
