Objectives: An abscess is a localized collection of pus contained within a fibrous capsule. In this study, we aimed to determine the demographic pattern, common anatomical sites, risk factors, and the microbial profile of abscesses in different body sites among children.

Methods: We conducted a prospective study in our pediatric surgical department among children with abscesses in different body sites between January 2019 and December 2022.

The purpose of this work was to prepare new isatin- and monothiomalondiamide-based indole derivatives, as well as to study the properties of the new compounds. The four-component reaction of 5-R-isatins (R = H, CH), malononitrile, monothiomalonamide (3-amino-3-thioxo- propanamide) and triethylamine in hot EtOH yields a mixture of isomeric triethylammonium 6'-amino-3'-(aminocarbonyl)-5'-cyano-2-oxo-1,2-dihydro-1'- and 6'-amino-3'-(aminocarbonyl)- 5'-cyano-2-oxo-1,2-dihydro-3'-spiro[indole-3,4'-pyridine]-2'-thiolates. The reactivity and structure of the products was studied.

Introduction: Regulation through statutory reporting is used in healthcare internationally to improve accountability, quality of care and patient safety. Since 2017, within the National Health Service (NHS) in England, NHS Secondary Care Trusts (NSCTs) are legally required to report annually both quantitative and qualitative information related to patient deaths within their care within their publicly available Quality Accounts as part of a countrywide patient safety programme: The Learning from Deaths (LfDs) programme.

Method: All LfDs reports published between 2017 (programme inception) and 2020 were reviewed and evaluated through a critical realist lens, quantitatively reported using descriptive statistics and qualitatively using reflexive thematic analysis.

Article Synopsis
  • The "Learning from Deaths" framework was introduced in the NHS in England in 2017 to improve patient safety by requiring trusts to report and analyze deaths associated with care problems.* -
  • A review of reports from 2017 to 2020 showed that while many trusts identified learnings and actions taken, there was inconsistency in the understanding of what constitutes effective learning and limited oversight.* -
  • Although the engagement with the LfDs program varies among trusts, it remains uncertain how well this learning translates into preventing future patient deaths, highlighting the need for a clear definition of effective learning in this context.*

Introduction: Prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is higher in South Asians than white Europeans. The offspring of hypertensive parents (OH) have greater risk of hypertension than offspring of normotensive parents (ON). We hypothesized that endothelium-dependent dilatation is already blunted in young South Asians, relative to young white European women, particularly in South Asian OH women.

This study was conducted to identify the association of coding variations in the HSPA8 gene with heat stress in two different breeds of sheep. All the coding regions of the HSPA8 gene of Awassi and Arabi sheep were covered by amplifying nine exons. A single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) was utilized to assess the genetic variations in both breeds.

Animal artificial insemination (AI) suffers from bacterial contamination of semen media which results in decreased success of the process of artificial insemination. It is difficult to treat the semen extender medium to reduce the bacterial growth in the presence of semen using the conventional techniques of bacterial inhibition. In the present work, a new optical method developed for bacterial growth inhibition in semen containing extender medium using diode laser (DL) and commercial cheap light emitting diode (LED) is presented.
