The analysis of 138 case records of acute mastoiditis (AM) patients treated for the last 5 years has demonstrated that mastoiditis incidence grows, it shows the trend to arise shortly after development of acute otitis media, classic symptoms occur less frequently while such symptoms as pain in the ear, pulse reflex, hypoacusis, elevated ESR are apparent. Most of the patients (71.7%) have undergone resection of the mastoid process.

In the last decade diverse clinical manifestations of mastoiditis have been reported. This paper describes specific features of the clinical development, diagnostic value of individual symptoms, and complications in 90 cases of mastoiditis treated in the otorhinolaryngological department of the Clinical Hospital for Emergency Medical Care, city of Sverdlovsk, during 1984-1988. The problem of otogenic intracranial complications is very important for medical practice. This paper presents data on the incidence, clinical development and outcome of intracranial complications of purulent otitis media. During 1979-1988 the ENT Department of the City First Aid Hospital treated 82 patients with otogenic intracranial complications, which developed often in the case of acute than chronic otitis media.
