Practice in Wide-Awake Hand Surgery: Differences Between United Kingdom and Cyprus.

The implementation of the wide-awake local anesthetic no tourniquet (WALANT) approach to surgical procedures in Cyprus has led to significant cost savings. In the United Kingdom, the implementation of WALANT has led to shorter waiting times for hand surgical procedures, cost savings for the National Health Service, and high patient satisfaction rates. In both countries, patient education is a prerequisite for WALANT surgery.

Background: The management of scaphotrapeziotrapezoidal (STT) joint osteoarthritis (OA) remains controversial. This systematic review aims to review the evidence for surgical interventions specific to STT OA.

Use of the Taylor spatial frame in compression arthrodesis of the ankle: a study of 10 cases.

Ankle fusion is a well established way of managing a variety of recalcitrant ankle pathologies including severe osteoarthritis and infected malunion of ankle fractures. Compression arthrodesis has been a widely accepted surgical means of achieving ankle fusion. The authors describe compression arthrodesis of the tibiotalar joint in 10 cases using the Taylor-Spatial Frame (TSF).

Correction of simple and complex pediatric deformities using the Taylor-Spatial Frame.

Introduction: Correcting multiplanar lower-limb pediatric deformities requires complex and, in many cases, staged procedures. The Taylor-Spatial Frame (TSF) is a sophisticated external fixator system that can be used to treat simple to complex multiplanar and multiapical skeletal deformities. We describe its use in 53 children during the last 7 years in a variety of pathologies and demonstrate its ease of use and versatility.

Minimal surgical approach for recurrent hip dislocation using the posterior lip augmentation device for the Charnley hip arthroplasty.

We present the management of recurrent posterior dislocations in cemented Charnley total hip arthroplasties treated with acetabular augmentation. Certain patients are elderly with comorbid conditions and diminished reserves. We have used a minimal surgical approach to implant 21 posterior lip augmentation devices in elderly patients.

Glass front of gas fire places: a clear and present danger.

Background: Glass fronted gas fires have become a popular addition to many homes as a source of heat energy. The flames, however, provide curiosity for young children attracting them towards the hot glass plate resulting in contact burns. Our study aimed to ascertain the features and pattern of morbidity of such injuries, and to address preventive measures.
