Publications by authors named "Zackary Sabetta"

Article Synopsis
  • Traumatic brain injury (TBI) leads to issues like diffuse axonal injury and neuroinflammation, affecting recovery and long-term health.
  • Research shows sex differences in blood-brain barrier permeability may accelerate brain aging and neurodegeneration post-TBI.
  • A study on rats revealed that TBI alters astrocyte interactions with blood vessels over time, with sex-dependent differences in the response that could point to ongoing vulnerabilities in the brain’s protective barriers.

Article Synopsis
  • The transition of the US Medical Licensing Examination Step 1 to a pass/fail format has heightened the significance of research experience for medical students applying to neurosurgery residency, particularly for those from schools without a dedicated neurosurgery program.
  • From 2016 to 2022, the number of applicants from such schools matched in neurosurgery increased initially, then slightly declined, with median publications per resident significantly rising during that period.
  • There were notable differences in the h-index between applicants who matched into top 40 programs compared to others, suggesting that research productivity may play a role in residency selection, even if overall publication numbers alone did not show significant differences.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) manifests late-onset and persisting clinical symptoms with implications for sex differences and increased risk for the development of age-related neurodegenerative diseases. Few studies have evaluated chronic temporal profiles of neuronal and glial pathology that include sex as a biological variable. After experimental diffuse TBI, late-onset and persisting somatosensory hypersensitivity to whisker stimulation develops at one-month post-injury and persists to at least two months post-injury in male rats, providing an model to evaluate the temporal profile of pathology responsible for morbidity.
