Histopathologically, FDE demonstrates a predominantly lymphocytic interface or lichenoid infiltrate with basal cell vacuolar changes and keratinocyte dyskeratosis/apoptosis. The term "neutrophilic fixed drug eruption" has been used to describe cases in which the inflammatory infiltrate is predominantly neutrophilic.
