The National Psoriasis Foundation surveyed a random, stratified sample of individuals with psoriatic disease in the United States to determine the prevalence of an unacceptable psoriatic arthritis (PsA) symptom state and its effect on depression and social participation. Acceptable and unacceptable levels of PsA were defined using established cutoff points (acceptable ≤4 vs unacceptable >4) on the Psoriatic Arthritis Impact of Disease 9. Psoriasis severity was defined by body surface area: mild < 3%, moderate-severe ≥ 3%.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFRhabdomyolysis is a rare adverse reaction that has a previously established association with levetiracetam use, which selectively binds the synaptic vesicle glycoprotein 2A (SV2A). Its structural analogue, brivaracetam, is a new third-generation antiseizure medication that has a higher affinity for SV2A, and current data suggests it provides a more favorable adverse event profile. Here, however, we report a case of rhabdomyolysis requiring dialysis in which serum creatine kinase level increased rapidly for several days until brivaracetam was discontinued.

Microneedling therapy is an increasingly popular treatment of several dermatologic conditions. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) may serve as a valuable adjunct to improve the regenerative effects of treatment. We review the evidence comparing the results of microneedling therapy with and without PRP.

Most cases are attributed to drug reactions, with antibiotics being the most common offending agents. Only a handful of case reports have described AGEP in the setting of antiepileptic use.

In this study, an alcohol-impregnated external ventricular drain port cap was added to a standardized ventriculostomy placement bundle. Rates of ventriculitis were reduced postintervention, but this finding did not reach statistical significance.

It is typically seen in patients with some degree of immunosuppression. Only 1 previous case has been reported in the setting of ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt infection.

Although early reperfusion strategies are essential to the management of these critically ill patients, additional treatment plans are often needed to stabilize and treat the patient before reperfusion may be possible. This article discusses pharmacologic and surgical interventions, their indications and contraindications, management strategies, and treatment algorithms.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAcute prevertebral calcific tendonitis (APCT) is a rare condition, the exact incidence of which is unknown. It is of particular interest to the emergency physician owing to the other potentially devastating conditions in the differential diagnosis of neck stiffness and/or odynophagia (including retropharyngeal abscess, infectious spondylitis, and meningitis.) In contrast, APCT has a benign clinical course and can be easily managed in the emergency department.
