Purpose: A great number of patients that suffer from lateral epicondylitis, commonly called tennis elbow (TE), are not successfully treated, meaning, not getting adequate therapeutic effects and the main origin of the pain not being handled appropriately. The hypothesis of the present study is that the inefficiency of the treatment of the chronic TE may often be due to underdiagnosis of posterior interosseous nerve (PIN) entrapment or and plica syndrome, as the authors believe that those pathologies can often occur simultaneously.

Methods: A prospective cross sectional study was conducted.

Background: A preoperative surgical strategy before hepatectomy for hepatocellular carcinoma is fundamental to minimize postoperative morbidity and mortality and to reach the best oncologic outcomes. Preoperative 3D reconstruction models may help to better choose the type of procedure to perform and possibly change the initially established plan based on conventional 2D imaging.

Methods: A non-randomized multicenter prospective trial with 136 patients presenting with a resectable hepatocellular carcinoma who underwent open or minimally invasive liver resection.

The Ca/calmodulin (CaM)-dependent kinase II (CaMKII) is well known for transmitting Ca-signals, which leads to a multitude of physiological responses. Its functionality is believed to involve CaMKII holoenzyme dynamics where trans-autophosphorylation of the crucial phosphorylation site, T286 occurs. Phosphorylation of this site does not occur when stimulated exclusively with the arrhythmia associated D130G mutant form of CaM in vitro.

Using a superposition of shifted Bessel beams with different longitudinal wave vectors and orbital angular momenta, we realize an optical beam having simultaneous axial, angular, and radial focusing narrower than the Fourier limit. Our findings can be useful for optical particle manipulation and high-resolution microscopy.

Chronic low-grade inflammation and oxidative damage are strongly associated with pathologies including cardiovascular disease. As a consequence, there is considerable interest in agents that mitigate damage. Selenium compounds can act as potent protective agents against oxidation due to the high reactivity and nucleophilicity of the selenium atom.

Gliomas are fatal brain tumors, and even low-grade gliomas (LGGs) have an average survival of less than a decade. Seizures are a common presentation of gliomas, particularly LGGs, and substantially impact quality of life. Glioma-related seizures differ from other focal epilepsies in their pathogenesis and in the likelihood of refractory epilepsy.

Background: Liver resection may be associated with substantial blood loss, and cell saver use has been recommended for patients at high risk. We performed a study to compare the allogenic erythrocyte transfusion rate after liver resection between patients who had intraoperative cell salvage with a cell saver device versus patients who did not. Our hypothesis was that cell salvage with autologous transfusion would reduce the allogenic blood transfusion rate.

We demonstrate experimentally the generation of an optical beam having an axial focusing that is narrower than the Fourier limit. The beam is constructed from a superposition of Bessel beams with different longitudinal wave vectors, realizing a super-oscillatory axial intensity distribution. Such beams can be useful for microscopy and for optical particle manipulation.

Calmodulin (CaM) is a Ca binding protein modulating multiple targets, several of which are associated with cardiac pathophysiology. Recently, CaM mutations were linked to heart arrhythmia. CaM is crucial for cell growth and viability, yet the effect of the arrhythmogenic CaM mutations on cell viability, as well as heart rhythm, remains unknown, and only a few targets with relevance for heart physiology have been analyzed for their response to mutant CaM.

Sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) is a signaling molecule that binds to five G protein-coupled receptors (Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 108:751-756, 2011). Modulation of these receptors has been associated with pleiotropic biological effects in the immune, cardiovascular, and central nervous systems (CNS). The functional S1P receptor antagonist fingolimod was the first member of this class of pharmacotherapeutics to be approved for treatment of relapsing multiple sclerosis (MS).

Background/objectives: The value of preoperative nutritional support in liver resection remains questionable. The aim of the present study was to compare the incidence of postoperative complications after liver resection between those patients that received preoperative immunonutrition versus those patients without preoperative nutritional support.

Subjects/methods: Patients undergoing elective liver resection between 9 November 2007 and 14 May 2013 were considered for the study: 84 with preoperative immunonutrition (Oral-Impact, Nestle, 3 × 237 ml per day for seven days at home) and 63 control patients without preoperative nutritional support.

"Calcium paradox" as a term describes the deleterious effects conferred to a heart perfused with a calcium-free solution followed by repletion, including loss of mechanical activity and sarcomere disruption. Given that the signaling mechanisms triggered by calcium paradox remain elusive, in the present study, we tried to investigate them in the isolated perfused heart from Rana ridibunda. Calcium paradox was found to markedly activate members of the MAPKs (p43-ERK, JNKs, p38-MAPK).

1.  It has previously been demonstrated that metabolism of drugs via a single enzymatic pathway, particularly CYP3A4, is associated with increased risk for drug-drug interactions (DDI). Quantitative experimental systems as well as integrated prediction models to assess such risk during the preclinical phase are highly warranted.

Article Synopsis
  • Experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) serves as a key model for studying multiple sclerosis (MS) and this study aimed to improve the protocol for inducing EAE in C57BL/6 mice through adoptive transfer.
  • The researchers successfully established a step-wise method that achieved approximately 70% incidence of EAE in recipient mice by using lymph node cells from donor mice immunized with myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG)p35-55.
  • Key findings revealed that lymph node cells collected 12 days post-immunization, when restimulated with MOG and interleukin-12, were essential for transferring disease, showing a strong association between inflammatory response and disease susceptibility
