We investigate the roles of molecular vibrations and intermolecular interactions in the mechanism underlying chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) in monolayers of helical tetrapyrrole (TPBT) molecules. The spin polarization of photoelectrons emitted from TPBT-functionalized Cu(111) surfaces was measured as a function of the temperature and the surface coverage. We employed DFT calculations to determine the energy and temperature-dependent population of vibrational modes which vary either the molecular pitch and/or the molecular radius.

Advances in omics technologies have allowed spatially resolved molecular profiling of single cells, providing a window not only into the diversity and distribution of cell types within a tissue, but also into the effects of interactions between cells in shaping the transcriptional landscape. Cells send chemical and mechanical signals which are received by other cells, where they can subsequently initiate context-specific gene regulatory responses. These interactions and their responses shape the individual molecular phenotype of a cell in a given microenvironment.

The split-and-delay unit (SDU) at FLASH2 will be upgraded to enable the simultaneous operation of two temporally, spatially and spectrally separated probe beams when the free-electron laser undulators are operated in a two-color scheme. By means of suitable thin filters and an optical grating beam path a wide range of combinations of photon energies in the spectral range from 150 eV to 780 eV can be chosen. In this paper, simulations of the spectral transmission and performance parameters of the filter technique are discussed, along with a monochromator with dispersion compensation presently under construction.

The electronic states of poly(9,9-dioctylfluorenyl--bithiophene) pF8T2 on H/Si(100) substrates, prototypical for organic photovoltaics, were investigated by ultrafast photoelectron spectroscopy and by time-resolved fluorescence studies. Occupied and unoccupied electronic states were analysed by ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS), static and dynamic femtosecond two-photon photoemission (2PPE), and time-correlated single photon counting (TCSPC). Time-resolved measurements allow assessment of population lifetimes of intermediate states.

We investigate the electron emission from 3D chiral silver alloy nanohelices initiated by femtosecond laser pulses with a central photon energy of hν = 1.65 eV, well below the work function of the material. We find hot but thermally distributed electron spectra and a strong anisotropy in the electron yield with left- and right-circularly polarized light excitations, which invert in sign between left- and right-handed helices.

A split-and-delay unit for the extreme ultraviolet and soft X-ray spectral regions has been built which enables time-resolved experiments at beamlines FL23 and FL24 at the Free-electron LASer in Hamburg (FLASH). Geometric wavefront splitting at a sharp edge of a beam splitting mirror is applied to split the incoming soft X-ray pulse into two beams. Ni and Pt coatings at grazing incidence angles have been chosen in order to cover the whole spectral range of FLASH2 and beyond, up to hν = 1800 eV.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by a long prodromal phase with a multitude of markers indicating an increased PD risk prior to clinical diagnosis based on motor symptoms. Current PD prediction models do not consider interdependencies of single predictors, lack differentiation by subtypes of prodromal PD, and may be limited and potentially biased by confounding factors, unspecific assessment methods and restricted access to comprehensive marker data of prospective cohorts. We used prospective data of 18 established risk and prodromal markers of PD in 1178 healthy, PD-free individuals and 24 incident PD cases collected longitudinally in the Tübingen evaluation of Risk factors for Early detection of NeuroDegeneration (TREND) study at 4 visits over up to 10 years.

The increasing quantity of multi-omic data, such as methylomic and transcriptomic profiles collected on the same specimen or even on the same cell, provides a unique opportunity to explore the complex interactions that define cell phenotype and govern cellular responses to perturbations. We propose a network approach based on Gaussian Graphical Models (GGMs) that facilitates the joint analysis of paired omics data. This method, called DRAGON (Determining Regulatory Associations using Graphical models on multi-Omic Networks), calibrates its parameters to achieve an optimal trade-off between the network's complexity and estimation accuracy, while explicitly accounting for the characteristics of each of the assessed omics 'layers.

The chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect facilitates a paradigm shift for controlling the outcome and efficiency of spin-dependent chemical reactions, for example, photoinduced water splitting. While the phenomenon is established in organic chiral molecules, its emergence in chiral but inorganic, nonmolecular materials is not yet understood. Nevertheless, inorganic spin-filtering materials offer favorable characteristics, such as thermal and chemical stability, over organic, molecular spin filters.
