The ophthalmologic investigation of workers of the two metallurgical enterprises has shown that 1045 persons (55%) from 1911 observed workers suffer chronic diseases of a forward piece of eyes. Chronic inflammatory diseases (blepharitis, conjunctivitis and blepharoconjunctivitis) are found at 28,9% of them, and dystrophic diseases (pinguecula/pterygium)--at 25,8%. Among metallurgists (1801 persons) ophthalmopathy was found in 2, 2 times more often than at persons in control group (110 observed engineers and managers).

We experimentally investigate the dispersion curve of an integrated silicon-on-insulator coupled-cavity waveguide in a photonic crystal environment using a technique based on far-field imaging. We show that a chain of eight coupled cavities of a moderate Q factor can form a continuous dispersion band characterized by extremely flat dispersion and a group index of 105+/-20 within a 2.6 nm wavelength range.

We present theoretical and experimental results of a polarization splitter device that consists of a photonic crystal (PhC) slab, which exhibits a large reflection coefficient for TE and a high transmission coefficient for TM polarization. The slab is embedded in a PhC tile operating in the self-collimation mode. Embedding the polarization-discriminating slab in a PhC with identical lattice symmetry suppresses the in-plane diffraction losses at the PhC-non-PhC interface.

Nematic liquid crystals are infiltrated into InP-based planar photonic crystals. Optical measurements as a function of temperature and polarization are used to study the average director field configuration in the nanometer-size holes: a planar equilibrium state is found.
