All-optical cascaded laser wakefield accelerator using ionization-induced injection.

We report on near-GeV electron beam generation from an all-optical cascaded laser wakefield accelerator (LWFA). Electron injection and acceleration are successfully separated and controlled in different LWFA stages by employing two gas cells filled with a He/O2 mixture and pure He gas, respectively. Electrons with a Maxwellian spectrum, generated from the first LWFA assisted by ionization-induced injection, were seeded into the second LWFA with a 3-mm-thick gas cell and accelerated to be a 0.

[Prokaryotic expression of recombinant bovine IL-4 and development of monoclonal antibodies against bovine IL-4].

Aim: To express recombinant bovine IL-4 (rBoIL-4) in Escherichia coli and prepare monoclonal antibody (mAb) against rBoIL-4.

Primary human endometrial cells were exposed to hypoxia preconditioning (HPC), HPC-hypoxia, and hypoxia conditions, and then endometrial tissue treated with ischemia preconditioning (IPC) was transplanted onto the chick embryo chorioallantoic membrane to investigate the role of slight ischemia of endometrium in the pathologic process of endometriosis. IPC up-regulated vascular endothelial growth factor expression and decreased apoptosis of endometrial cells, thus facilitating the endometrial fragments' ectopic implantation.

[Effects of irrigation amount and nitrogen fertilization rate on wheat yield and soil nitrate content].

A field experiment was conducted to study the effects of irrigation amount and nitrogen fertilization rate on wheat yield and soil nitrate content. With the increase of irrigation amount, the soil nitrate content in 0-200 cm layer at the same nitrogen fertilization rates had a trend of decrease -increase-decrease. Under irrigation, the soil nitrate content was significantly lower in 0-80 cm layer while significantly higher in 80-200 cm layer, compared with the control.

Arthritis-associated inflammatory pain represents a serious medical problem worldwide. Current treatments for arthritic pain are not very effective and cause unwanted side effects. Toll-like receptor 7 mediates pruritus.

Toll-like receptors are typically expressed in immune cells to regulate innate immunity. We found that functional Toll-like receptor 7 (TLR7) was expressed in C-fiber primary sensory neurons and was important for inducing itch (pruritus), but was not necessary for eliciting mechanical, thermal, inflammatory and neuropathic pain in mice. Our results indicate that TLR7 mediates itching and is a potential therapeutic target for anti-itch treatment in skin disease conditions.

Sequential treatment of drug-resistant tumors with RGD-modified liposomes containing siRNA or doxorubicin.

Tumor targeting drug delivery systems are being the ideal carriers of systemic administration for tumor therapy. We have reported previously that RGD peptide (arginine-glycine-aspartic acid)-modified liposomes containing drugs could increase targeting to tumor by binding with the integrin receptors overexpressed on tumor cells. RNA interference plays an important role on down-regulation of P-glycoprotein (P-gp), which is a drug efflux transporter overexpressed on multi-drug-resistant (MDR) tumor cells.

[Effects of Shenkangwan on renal expressions of angiotensin II and its type I receptor in rats with early diabetic nephropathy].

Objective: To investigate the effects of Shenkangwan on the expressions of angiotensin II (AngII) and its type I receptor (AT(1)R) and the renalprotection mechanism of Shenkangwan in rats with early diabetic nephropathy (DN).

Methods: The rat models of DN established by a single injection of streptozotocin were randomly divided into 4 groups, namely the model group, Shenkangwan treatment group, irbesartan treatment group, and Shenkangwan and irbesartan treatment group, with normal rats as the control. All the rats received daily gavage for 8 weeks.

Periodic nanoripples in the surface and subsurface layers in ZnO irradiated by femtosecond laser pulses.

We present the formation of periodic ripples in ZnO crystal irradiated by a wavelength-tunable femtosecond laser. The results indicate that in the surface thin layer, the periods change from 0.1 lambda to lambda with laser fluences and pulse numbers, and in the subsurface layer the periods are always lambda/2n, where n is the refractive index.

[Dynamic simulation of photosynthate allocation in maize organs based on functional equilibrium hypothesis].

By using the 2004-2008 observation data of maize biomass and related environmental factors from the Jinzhou Agricultural Ecosystem Research Station of Shenyang Institute of Atmospheric Environment under China Meteorological Administration (CMA), the Friedlingstein model was validated and tested at station site and daily time scales. A model of soil available nutrient coefficient for maize field was developed, based on fertilization, soil temperature, and soil available water; and a daily time scale maize photosynthate allocation model was built, according to the functional equilibrium hypothesis. Comparing with Friedlingstein model, the daily time scale maize photosynthate allocation model could give more accurate simulation of photosynthate allocation in maize root, stem, and leaf, and provide technical support for accurate simulation of daily net primary productivity of maize agro-ecosystem.

Resolvins RvE1 and RvD1 attenuate inflammatory pain via central and peripheral actions.

Inflammatory pain, such as arthritis pain, is a growing health problem. Inflammatory pain is generally treated with opioids and cyclooxygenase (COX) inhibitors, but both are limited by side effects. Recently, resolvins, a unique family of lipid mediators, including RvE1 and RvD1 derived from omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid, have shown marked potency in treating disease conditions associated with inflammation.

Background: To retrospectively review the incidence, treatment efficacy, we followed up newly diagnosed chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) patients residing in Shanghai during 2001-2006.

Methods: All eligible cases were reviewed with the data of efficacy responses as well as overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) time.

Results: A total of 615 cases entered the study.

[Effects of irrigation stage and amount on winter wheat fructan accumulation and translocation after anthesis and water use efficiency].

Field experiments were conducted in Tai' an and Yanzhou of Shandong Province in 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 to study the effects of irrigation stage and amount on the accumulation and translocation of fructan in winter wheat penult stem and sheath after anthesis and the water use efficiency. No irrigation in whole growth period promoted the translocation of fructan from penult stem and sheath to grain at late grain-filling stage. Irrigation with 60 mm water at jointing and anthesis stages increased the flag leaf photosynthetic rate and photo-assimilate accumulation after anthesis, and the contribution of the photo-assimilates to the grain.

Objective: The novel estrogen receptor-alpha (ER-alpha) variant ER-alpha36 is reported to be functional in the estrogen signaling pathway and is related to tamoxifen resistance in breast cancer. However, ER-alpha36 tends to be a favorable factor for survival in patients without tamoxifen therapy. To investigate the mechanisms behind this paradox, we determined the differences between the transcriptional profiles of ER-alpha36 and full-length ER-alpha (ER-alpha66) in breast cancers and matched normal tissues.

Peripheral inflammation induces persistent central sensitization characterized by mechanical allodynia and heat hyperalgesia that are mediated by distinct mechanisms. Compared to well-demonstrated mechanisms of heat hyperalgesia, mechanisms underlying the development of mechanical allodynia and contralateral pain are incompletely known. In this study, we investigated the distinct role of spinal JNK in heat hyperalgesia, mechanical allodynia, and contralateral pain in an inflammatory pain model.

[Effects of water-nitrogen interaction on soil water utilization by wheat and fructan content in wheat stem].

A field experiment was conducted to study the effects of water-nitrogen interaction on the flag leaf photosynthetic rate, penult stem fructan content, fertilizer N use efficiency, and soil water use efficiency of strong gluten wheat variety 'Jimai 20'. Three N application levels (N0, 0 kg x hm(-2); N1, 180 kg x hm(-2); and N2, 240 kg x hm(-2)) and four irrigation schedules (W0, no irrigation; W1, irrigation before sowing and at jointing and flowering stages; W2, irrigation before sowing, before wintering, and at jointing and flowering stages; W3, irrigation before sowing, before wintering, and at jointing, flowering, and grain-filling stages) were designed. The irrigation amount was 60 mm each time.
