The central nervous system (CNS) effects of anticholinergic agents have been documented in various patient populations and to varying degrees in case reports, brain-activity surrogates, and computerized cognitive testing. The older patient population with overactive bladder represents a group at increased risk of cognitive impairment and other CNS side effects associated with antimuscarinic agents. The complexity of the effect of anticholinergic agents on CNS function requires an increased level of careful investigation.

Antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity (ADCC) and spontaneous lymphocyte-mediated cytotoxicity (SLMC) of the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) of 12 children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in an active clinical stage and of 15 ALL patients in bone marrow remission were studied on allogeneic and xenogeneic targets. Leukemic children with clinically active disease had low SLMC and ADCC activity while the PBMC of patients in remission exerted normal cytotoxicity as compared to the corresponding mean values of an age and sex matched healthy control group.

Plasma cortisol concentration was determined in blood samples obtained in six newborns during exchange transfusion at 3--5 minute intervals. A radiotransin-assay using horse serum as a binding protein and toluene-based scintillation fluid for separation of unbound tracer proved to be a relatively specific method for determination of cortisol level in the plasma of newborns. Irregular oscillations were observed in four newborns, whereas a single peak could be demonstrated in two cases during the 40--70 minute period observed.
