[Fe(Por)CF(3)SO(3)] (Por = porphyrin dianion) can efficiently catalyze selective oxidation of terminal aryl alkenes and aliphatic alkenes to aldehydes in good to high yields under mild conditions.

Success rate and complications of endoscopic extraction of common bile duct stones over 2 cm in diameter.

Background: Clinically, common bile duct (CBD) stones >2 cm are difficult to remove by endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). To evaluate this observation, the rates of successful clearance of CBD stones and complications were compared between ERCP extraction of CBD stones of >2 cm and <2 cm in diameter.

Methods: All patients who had undergone endoscopic extraction of CBD stones at the Endoscopy Center of Shanghai First People's Hospital from May 2004 to May 2008 were reviewed.

The intrinsic fluorescence spectrum of dilute gastric juice as a novel diagnostic tool for gastric cancer.

Objective: To investigate the intrinsic fluorescence spectrum of gastric juice as a diagnostic method for gastric cancer.

Methods: We collected gastric juice by gastroscopy in 1,870 patients from May 2001 to March 2006, of whom 202 were involved in a preliminary test, 162 in experimental optimization and 1,506 in clinical verification. The best dilution and pH value were chosen in the experimental optimization phase.

[Diagnostic values of GerdQ, 24-h ambulatory oesophageal pH and impedance-pH monitoring in Barrett's esophagus, reflux esophagitis and non-erosive reflux disease].

Objective: To compare the diagnostic values of GerdQ questionnaire, 24-h pH monitoring and 24-h impedance-pH monitoring for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and to analyze the reflux patterns of Barrett's esophagus (BE), reflux esophagitis (RE) and non-erosive disease (NERD).

Methods: From June 1, 2009 to September 30, 2010, 205 GERD patients were included according to the Montreal consensus. All were surveyed by a GerdQ questionnaire and underwent 24-h impedance-pH monitoring.

[A clinical analysis of 9 cases of pulmonary alveolar proteinosis with secondary infection].

Objective: To describe the clinical characteristics of 9 cases of idiopathic pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (iPAP) with secondary infections.

Method: The clinical and radiological data of 9 patients with iPAP and secondary infections admitted into Peking Union Medical College Hospital from 1st January 1990 to 1st January 2010 were retrospectively analyzed.

Results: In that period, there were 97 patients of iPAP were admitted in our hospital.

[Retrospective analysis of the prognosis factors in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis].

Objective: To investigate the prognostic implications of clinical and physiological variables, and the cellular classification of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). The effect of treatment with glucocorticoids with or without cytotoxic drugs was also evaluated.

Methods: The significances of clinical, arterial blood gas analysis, pulmonary function test, lung high-resolution computed tomography, echocardiography and BALF in the prognosis of patients with IPF were assessed in 65 patients with IPF at diagnosis.

Clinical and prognostic characteristics of pulmonary mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma: a retrospective analysis of 23 cases in a Chinese population.

Background: Pulmonary mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma is the most frequent type of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) that primarily involves the lungs. It represents a rare entity accounting for less than 1% of all NHLs and the clinical features have yet to be clearly elucidated.

Methods: The clinicopathological features and radiological data of 23 patients with pulmonary MALT lymphoma confirmed by biopsy in Peking Union Medical College Hospital from January 2001 to December 2010 were retrospectively analyzed.

Mechanical properties of 7-10mm bone grafts and small slurry grafts in impaction bone grafting.

We compared the mechanical properties of morselized cancellous bone grafts of two sizes: 7-10 mm bone and small slurry bone (about 2 mm). The in vitro test was designed to simulate the hammer and impactor system for impaction bone grafting used in hip arthroplasty clinical practice. The 7-10 mm bone grafts showed higher height, elastic modulus, and massive extrusion strength than those of the small slurry bone grafts.

Utilization of weedy rice for development of japonica hybrid rice (Oryza sativa L.).

Two representative weedy rice lines, three typical japonica varieties and three typical indica varieties were used for 6 pairs of reciprocal crosses. The morphological traits of twelve F(1) hybrid lines, their parents and four elite cultivars were investigated for heterosis over mid-parent (HM), over parent (HP) and competitive heterosis (CH) analysis. Traits detected in weedy rice lines seemed larger than those in cultivars and excellent heterosis was produced in weedy rice crossing with japonica rice.

Direct determination of the electron-phonon coupling matrix element in a correlated system.

High-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy measurements have been carried out on an optimally doped cuprate Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(8+δ). The momentum-dependent energy and linewidth of an A1 optical phonon were obtained. Based on these data as well as detailed knowledge of the electronic structure, we developed a scheme to determine the electron-phonon coupling (EPC) matrix element related to a specific phonon mode.

Selection of allografts for impaction bone grafting for bone defect reconstruction on the acetabular side.

Objective: To review the choices of allografts for bone defect reconstruction in acetabular revision surgery using the technique of impaction bone grafting.

Data Sources: The data cited in this review were mainly obtained from articles listed in PubMed that were published from January 1993 to July 2009. The search terms were "impaction bone grafting", "particle size", "mechanical property" and "biological behavior".

A preliminary report of patellofemoral arthroplasty in isolated patellofemoral arthritis.

Background: Isolated patellofemoral osteoarthritis is not uncommon. Surgical treatment of isolated patellofemoral arthritis remains controversial and poses a challenging treatment dilemma. The present study aimed to evaluate the short-term results of patellofemoral arthroplasty for patients with isolated patellofemoral osteoarthritis.

[Clinical analysis of 26 cases of nocardiosis].

Objective: To describe the clinical characteristics of nocardiosis.

Method: The clinical and radiological data of 26 patients with nocardiosis admitted into Peking Union Medical College Hospital from 1st January 1990 to 1st January 2010 were retrospectively analyzed. All of the patients had our microbiology laboratory identified nocardia species in one or more clinical specimens.

Ratio-contrast imaging of dual-energy absorption for element mapping with a scanning transmission X-ray microscope.

The detection of chemical mapping with a spatial resolution of 30 nm has been achieved with a scanning transmission X-ray microscope at the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility. For each specimen, two absorption images were scanned separately with energies E(1) and E(2): E(1) was focused on the absorption edge of the chosen element and E(2) was focused below the edge. A K-edge division method is proposed and applied to obtain the element mapping.

Diastereoselective HOTf-catalyzed three-component one-pot 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of alpha-diazo ester, nitrosobenzene and electron-deficient alkene.

A novel HOTf-catalyzed three-component one-pot cycloaddition of alpha-diazo ester, nitrosobenzene and electron deficient alkene has been developed. This catalysis is very simple to operate and tolerant to moisture/oxygen to afford the product with high to excellent diastereoselectivity in good to excellent yield, thus providing a useful and convenient method for the preparation of diverse functionalized isoxazolidines under very mild conditions.

[Clinical and radiological features of pulmonary tuberculosis manifested as interstitial lung diseases.].

Objective: The purpose of this paper was to investigate the clinical and radiological features of pulmonary tuberculosis presenting as interstitial lung diseases (ILD).

Methods: We analyzed the data of cases suspected of diffuse parenchyma lung diseases at this hospital between October 2003 and October 2007. The diagnosis of active pulmonary tuberculosis was based on epithelioid granuloma or positive acid-fast bacilli in lung biopsy and changes on serial radiographs obtained during treatment.

Clinical features and prognosis in 21 patients with extrinsic allergic alveolitis.

Objective: To assess the spectrum of causes, clinical features, differences between disease phases, and prognosis of extrinsic allergic alveolitis (EAA).

Methods: Patients with EAA diagnosed at Peking Union Medical College Hospital from August 1983 to May 2007 were analyzed retrospectively. Their medical records were examined to gather clinical, laboratorial, radiological, and histopathological data.

The performance of photooxidatively crosslinked acellular bovine jugular vein conduits in the reconstruction of connections between pulmonary arteries and right ventricles.

In this study, valved photooxidatively crosslinked acellular bovine jugular vein conduits (BJVCs) were implanted in young dogs to reconstruct the connections of pulmonary arteries and right ventricles, with acellular conduits used as controls. All acellular conduits had moderate to severe valvular dysfunction and were explanted at 1-month implantation (n = 5). Histological examination showed inflammatory cell infiltration and intimal hyperplasia in the walls, and severe inflammatory cell infiltration and thrombosis in the valves.

Temporal changes of surface wave velocity associated with major Sumatra earthquakes from ambient noise correlation.

Detecting temporal changes of the medium associated with major earthquakes has implications for understanding earthquake genesis. Here we report temporal changes of surface wave velocity over a large area associated with 3 major Sumatra earthquakes in 2004, 2005, and 2007. We use ambient noise correlation to retrieve empirical Green's function (EGF) of surface waves between stations.
