Unlabelled: Fetal phonocardiography is a well-known auscultation technique for evaluation of fetal health. However, murmurs that are synchronous with the maternal heartbeat can often be heard while listening to fetal heart sounds. Maternal placental murmurs (MPM) could be used to detect maternal cardiovascular and placental abnormalities, but the recorded MPMs are often contaminated by ambient interference and noise.

It is shown that the integration of a single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) together with a BiCMOS gating circuit on one chip reduces the parasitic capacitance a lot and therefore reduces the avalanche build-up time. The capacitance of two bondpads, which are necessary for the connection of an SPAD chip and a gating chip, are eliminated by the integration. The gating voltage transients of the SPAD are measured using an integrated mini-pad and a picoprobe.

The force-length relationship is usually obtained for isometric contractions with maximal activation, but less is known about how sarcomere length affects force during submaximal activation. During submaximal activation, length-dependent alterations in calcium sensitivity, owing to changes in cross-bridge kinetics (rate of attachment and/or detachment), result in an activation-dependent shift in optimal length to longer sarcomere lengths. It is known that sarcomere length, as well as temperature and phosphorylation of the regulatory light chains of myosin, can modify Ca⁺ sensitivity by altering the probability of cross-bridge interaction.

In the transitioning era towards the COVID-19 endemic, there is still a sizable population that has never been vaccinated against COVID-19 in the Netherlands. This study employs Bayesian spatio-temporal modelling to assess the relative chances of COVID-19 vaccination uptake - first, second, and booster doses - both at the municipal and regional (public health services) levels. Incorporating ecological regression modelling to consider socio-demographic factors, our study unveils a diverse spatio-temporal distribution of vaccination uptake.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory neurological disease of the central nervous system with a subclinical phase preceding frank neuroinflammation. CD8 T cells are abundant within MS lesions, but their potential role in disease pathology remains unclear. Using high-throughput single-cell RNA sequencing and single-cell T cell receptor analysis, we compared CD8 T cell clones from the blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of monozygotic twin pairs in which the cotwin had either no or subclinical neuroinflammation (SCNI).

Adherent cell systems are usually dissociated before being cryopreserved, as standard protocols are established for cells in suspension. The application of standard procedures to more complex systems, sensitive to dissociation, such as adherent monolayers, especially comprising mature cell types or tissues remains unsatisfactory. Uncontrolled cell detachment due to intracellular tensile stress, membrane ruptures and damages of adhesion proteins are common during freezing and thawing of cell monolayers.

  • The 2022 International Consortium for Optic Neuritis introduced new diagnostic criteria using optical coherence tomography (OCT) to better assess optic neuritis, with a particular focus on intereye difference metrics in patients with MOG-associated optic neuritis (MOG-ON).
  • A multi-center study validated the diagnostic value of pre-established intereye difference cutoff values in 66 subjects, finding that metrics from the macular ganglion cell and inner plexiform layer (mGCIP) were most sensitive and specific for diagnosing MOG-ON.
  • Results indicated that OCT-based intereye difference metrics had high diagnostic accuracy for MOG-ON, especially in cases of unilateral optic neuritis, suggesting these metrics could effectively distinguish affected individuals

  • MET amplification in EGFR-mutant non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is a common resistance to EGFR inhibitors, and combining EGFR and MET inhibitors shows promise but has varied definitions of MET amplification.
  • In a study of 43 patients with MET copy number gain, those who received the combination of EGFR and MET inhibitors had an 82% clinical benefit rate and longer progression-free survival compared to those receiving MET inhibitors alone or standard of care.
  • The findings suggest that true MET amplification drives better outcomes with combination therapy, indicating a need for further research into how different types of MET copy number gain affect treatment response.

  • The study applied the 2022 international consensus criteria for optic neuritis (ICON) to 160 patients with acute optic neuritis to assess its effectiveness in classification.
  • About 50% of the patients were classified as definite optic neuritis, while 43% were not classified as having ON, mainly due to the absence of critical symptoms like relative afferent pupillary defect (RAPD) and dyschromatopsia.
  • The adjusted criteria led to a higher classification of 79% of patients as having optic neuritis, highlighting the importance of thorough examinations for accurate diagnosis.*
