Sulforaphane Treatment of Young Men with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) comprises a heterogeneous group of neurodevelopmental disorders that begin in early childhood. They are characterized by differences in behavior and delays in communication and affect at least 1% of children. Observational studies have now confirmed that behaviors of a substantial percentage of children with autism tend to improve with the onset of febrile illness, which might be the downstream effects of altered metabolic pathways involving increased expression of heat shock proteins (HSP) and cellular stress responses.

Arsenic release from Floridan Aquifer rock during incubations simulating aquifer storage and recovery operations.

While aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) is becoming widely accepted as a way to address water supply shortages, there are concerns that it may lead to release of harmful trace elements such as arsenic (As). Thus, mechanisms of As release from limestone during ASR operations were investigated using 110-day laboratory incubations of core material collected from the Floridan Aquifer, with treatment additions of labile or refractory dissolved organic matter (DOM) or microbes. During the first experimental phase, core materials were equilibrated with native groundwater lacking in DO to simulate initial non-perturbed anaerobic aquifer conditions.

Contact lens associated microbial keratitis: practical considerations for the optometrist.

Microbial keratitis (MK) is a corneal condition that encompasses several different pathogens and etiologies. While contact lens associated MK is most often associated with bacterial infections, other pathogens (fungi, species, etc) may be responsible. This review summarizes the risk factors, microbiology, diagnostic characteristics, and treatment options for all forms of contact lens-related MK.

Hepatocellular Carcinoma in Children: Does Modified Platinum- and Doxorubicin-Based Chemotherapy Increase Tumor Resectability and Change Outcome? Lessons Learned From the SIOPEL 2 and 3 Studies.

Introduction: The aim of this article is to present an experience of two prospective studies from the International Childhood Liver Tumor Strategy Group (SIOPEL 2 [S2] and SIOPEL [S3]) trials and to evaluate whether modified platinum- and doxorubicin-based chemotherapy is capable of increasing tumor resectability and changing patient outcomes.

Methods: Between 1995 and 2006, 20 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) were included in the S2 trial and 70 were included in the S3 trial. Eighty-five patients remained evaluable.

Case-Control Pilot Study of Soft Contact Lens Wearers With Corneal Infiltrative Events and Healthy Controls.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess risk factors associated with soft contact lens (SCL)-related corneal infiltrative events (CIEs).

Methods: This was a single-visit, case-control study conducted at five academic centers in North America. Cases were defined as current SCL wearers with a symptomatic CIE.

Outcomes of Full-Right-Full-Left Split Liver Transplantation in Adults in the USA: A Propensity-Score Matched Analysis.

Background: Splitting a liver for utilization in adult/pediatric recipients has been shown to decrease mortality on the wait list without increasing the overall risk of long-term graft failure compared to a whole graft. However, splitting a single donor organ for two adult recipients, full-right-full-left split liver transplantation (FRFLSLT), to overcome organ shortage is still considered controversial.

Objective: This study assessed the outcome of FRFLSLT comparing full-right (FR) and full-left (FL) with whole liver (WL) allografts in adults (1998-2010) using UNOS standard transplant analysis and research (STAR) file.

Contact Lens Corneal Inflammatory Events in a University Population.

Purpose: To identify the contact lens-related modifiable and nonmodifiable factors associated with corneal inflammatory events (CIEs) in a university eye care center.

Methods: Contact lens-wearing undergraduate and graduate/professional students (age range, 18 to 36 years) with CIEs and contact lens wearers without complications (non-CIEs) were surveyed about their age, education level, overnight wear, brand of lens, brand of care solution, storage case age, topping-off, and lens replacement. Logistic regression was used to assess the impact of participant characteristics (demographic and behavior) and contact lens factors on the risk of a CIE.

Sorption of hydrophobic organic compounds to a diverse suite of carbonaceous materials with emphasis on biochar.

Carbonaceous materials like biochars are increasingly recognized as effective sorbent materials for sequestering organic pollutants. Here, we study sorption behavior of two common hydrophobic organic contaminants 2,2',5,5'-tetrachlorobiphenyl (CB52) and phenanthrene (PHE), on biochars and other carbonaceous materials (CM) produced at a wide range of conditions and temperatures from various feedstocks. The primary aim was to establish structure-reactivity relationships responsible for the observed variation in CM and biochar sorption characteristics.

Determining and correcting for background contributions of Re and Os from chemical reagents is critical for accurate and precise Re-Os dating of materials with parts per billion to parts per trillion Re and Os concentrations. Here we investigate reducing Os content in nitric acid, as it is the main contributor to the Os blank. Pretreating high-purity nitric acid with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) significantly reduces nitric acid's Os contribution to femtogram levels, greatly reducing Os blank corrections.

Plastic Surgery Response in Natural Disasters.

Disasters cause untold damage and are often unpredictable; however, with proper preparation, these events can be better managed. The initial response has the greatest impact on the overall success of the relief effort. Sleep problems in these disorders may not only worsen daytime behaviors and core symptoms of ASD and ADHD but also contribute to parental stress levels. Management of Brain Metastasis in Patients With Pulmonary Neuroendocrine Carcinomas.

Background: The patterns of intracranial failure in patients with brain metastasis from pulmonary neuroendocrine carcinoma (PNEC) remain unknown.

Methods: From 1998 to 2013, 29 patients with the diagnosis of PNEC were treated for brain metastasis: 16 patients (55%) underwent whole-brain radiation therapy (WBRT), 5 (17%) patients underwent WBRT with a stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) boost, and 8 (28%) patients underwent primary SRS alone.

Physicochemical and sorptive properties of biochars derived from woody and herbaceous biomass.

It is unclear how the properties of biochar control its ability to sorb metals. In this work, physicochemical properties of a variety of biochars, made from four types of feedstock at three pyrolysis temperatures (300, 450 and 600°C) were compared to their ability to sorb arsenic (As) and lead (Pb) in aqueous solutions. Anisotropic phases of superfluid ^{3}he in compressed aerogel.

It has been shown that the relative stabilities of various superfluid states of ^{3}He can be influenced by anisotropy in a silica aerogel framework. We prepared a suite of aerogel samples compressed up to 30% for which we performed pulsed NMR on ^{3}He imbibed within the aerogel. We identified A and B phases and determined their magnetic field-temperature phase diagrams as a function of strain.

Turbulent black holes.

We demonstrate that rapidly spinning black holes can display a new type of nonlinear parametric instability-which is triggered above a certain perturbation amplitude threshold-akin to the onset of turbulence, with possibly observable consequences. This instability transfers from higher temporal and azimuthal spatial frequencies to lower frequencies-a phenomenon reminiscent of the inverse cascade displayed by (2+1)-dimensional fluids. Our finding provides evidence for the onset of transitory turbulence in astrophysical black holes and predicts observable signatures in black hole binaries with high spins.

Environmental science. Rethinking the marine carbon cycle: factoring in the multifarious lifestyles of microbes.

The profound influence of marine plankton on the global carbon cycle has been recognized for decades, particularly for photosynthetic microbes that form the base of ocean food chains. However, a comprehensive model of the carbon cycle is challenged by unicellular eukaryotes (protists) having evolved complex behavioral strategies and organismal interactions that extend far beyond photosynthetic lifestyles. As is also true for multicellular eukaryotes, these strategies and their associated physiological changes are difficult to deduce from genome sequences or gene repertoires—a problem compounded by numerous unknown function proteins.

Treatment of Large Brain Metastases With Stereotactic Radiosurgery.

Introduction: We report our series of patients with large brain metastases, >3 cm in diameter, who received stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) as a component of their treatment, focusing on survival and intracranial recurrence rates.

Materials And Methods: The brain tumor database was queried for patients treated with SRS for large brain metastases. Local recurrence (LR) and distant brain recurrence (DBR) rates were calculated using cumulative incidence analysis, and overall survival (OS) was calculated using Kaplan-Meier analysis.

Manganese oxide-modified biochars: preparation, characterization, and sorption of arsenate and lead.

This work explored two modification methods to improve biochar's ability to sorb arsenic (As) and lead (Pb). In one, pine wood feedstock was pyrolyzed in the presence of MnCl2·4H2O (MPB) and in the other it was impregnated with birnessite via precipitation following pyrolysis (BPB). The resulting biochars were characterized using thermogravimetry, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray analyses.
