Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography findings in Syphilitic Outer Retinitis.

Purpose: to report optical coherence tomography angiography findings in syphilitic outer retinopathy, a singular clinical manifestation of ocular syphilis.

Methods: case report.

Results: Multimodal imaging including optical coherence tomography angiography was performed in a patient presenting syphilitic outer retinopathy.

Experiential training of mental health graduate students in emotional processing skills: A randomized, controlled trial.

Emotional processing interventions for trauma and psychological conflicts are underutilized. Lack of adequate training in emotional processing techniques and therapists' lack of confidence in utilizing such interventions are barriers to implementation. We developed and tested an experiential training to improve trainees' performance in a set of transtheoretical emotional processing skills: eliciting patient disclosure of difficult experiences, responding to defenses against disclosure, and eliciting adaptive emotions.

Effect of Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum) Seed Cakes by Horses Subjected to Physical Exertion.

Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) provides several possible benefits for horses, namely anti-inflammatory, antioxidant effects, hepatoprotective, and neuroprotective effects. Silybin exerts also pronounced effects on energy metabolism, that could be useful for sport horses. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of milk thistle seed cakes (in the form of a granulated mixture with barley) on blood biochemical parameters (total protein, albumin, bilirubin, urea, creatinine, ALT, AST, ALP, GGT, LDH, the total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, TAG, BHB, NEFA, creatine kinase, lactate, glucose, glutathione peroxidase, total antioxidant capacity, cortisol, calcium, and phosphorus) to monitor the differences between the experimental (milk thistle in feed) and control horses after exposure of the monitored horses to heavy physical exercise (combined driving) total number of horses was 12 Czech Warmblood breed horses.

Effectiveness of self-administered mirror therapy on upper extremity impairments and function of acute stroke patients: study protocol.

Background: Many therapeutic interventions are performed by physiotherapists to improve upper extremity function and/or activities of daily living (ADL) in stroke patients. Mirror therapy (MT) is a simple technique that can be self-administered by the patients with intact cognition following patient education by a skilled physiotherapist. However, the effectiveness of self-administered MT in post-stroke patients in upper extremity function remains unclear.

Dose Effect of Milk Thistle () Seed Cakes on the Digestibility of Nutrients, Flavonolignans and the Individual Components of the Silymarin Complex in Horses.

Milk thistle seeds contain a mixture of flavonoids known as silymarin, which consists of silybin, isosilybin, silychristine, and silydianin. Until now, there has been no evidence of monitoring the digestibility of silymarin complex in horses. The aim of the research was to evaluate the digestibility of silymarin complex and the effect of nutrient digestibility in horses.

Influence of Milk Thistle () Seed Cakes on Biochemical Values of Equine Plasma Subjected to Physical Exertion.

Veterinarians can recommend milk thistle for the treatment of equine liver disease and laminitis. Milk thistle seed cakes were fed in the range of normal feed doses in this study. The milk thistle seed cakes were fed (twice a day) to the experimental group of the horses ( = 5) and biochemical blood markers (TP, Albumin, ALT (alanine transaminase), AST (aspartate transaminase), ALP (alkaline phosphatase), GGT (gamma-glutamyltransferase), Bilirubin, Cholesterol, HDL (high-density lipoprotein), LDL (low-density lipoprotein), TAG (triacylglycerol), BHB (beta-hydroxybutyric acid), NEFA (non-esterified fatty acids), creatine kinase, creatinine, Urea, GSH-Px (glutathione peroxidase), TAS (total antioxidant status), lactate, glucose, cortisol, Ca, Pi) were monitored.

Development of a Multicomponent Intervention to Initiate Health Behavior Change in Primary Care: The Kickstart Health Program.

There is a growing movement to integrate behavioral health specialists into primary care settings in order to better manage patients' health behaviors. Group interventions in healthcare settings can provide services to multiple individuals simultaneously; however, the participants' experiences taking part in these activities and the logistics of integrating them into clinical settings are largely under-studied. This article describes the development and implementation of a novel group intervention for health behavior change, The Kickstart Health Program, which integrates components of cognitive, behavioral, acceptance, and experiential therapies.

Background: The basis of retinal detachment repair is sealing the retinal breaks. In order to seal the retinal breaks, chorioretinal adhesion around these lesions has to be achieved. Laser retinopexy is not immediate thus necessitates the use of a temporal endotamponade to maintain both tissues in apposition.

Removal of Ingested Magnetic Bodies via Laparoscopic Appendectomy.

Ingestion of a foreign body is a frequent diagnosis in the pediatric population. In a small percentage of cases, foreign bodies themselves are strong magnets, and swallowing of multiple magnetic bodies can lead to serious complications in the gastrointestinal tract. Two consecutive case reports of patients who swallowed two magnetic beads are presented.

Commonly used intracameral antibiotics for endophthalmitis prophylaxis: A literature review.

Endophthalmitis is a serious complication of cataract surgery that occurs in thousands of patients each year. To decrease the incidence of postoperative endophthalmitis, many surgeons inject intracameral antibiotics (cefuroxime, moxifloxacin, and vancomycin) routinely at the end of surgery. A large number of recently published retrospective studies and large database analyses have reported decreased endophthalmitis rates with routine antibiotic use, and the only prospective, multicenter, randomized trial performed by the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery demonstrated that intracameral cefuroxime decreases the incidence of postoperative endophthalmitis.

The first charity for protection of orphans in Prague was opened in the 16th century by Italian living in Prague. The first outpatient department for sick children in Prague was opened by Johann Melitsch in 1790 in the Saint Lazare hospital in Charles Square. In the same hospital, the first paediatric department with 9 beds was opened by Eduard Kratzman in 1842.

Cholelithiasis and choledocholithiasis in children; risk factors for development.

Purpose: To compare anthropometric data (body mass index [BMI]) in patients without lithiasis to patients with symptomatic simple cholelithiasis or choledocholithiasis.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed data from 147 patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy between 2001-2015. Complete growth data from 98 patients was compared with anthropometric data from the population of the Czech Republic and a control group (BMI of 100 consecutive patients without biliary stones in abdominal ultrasound who were admitted to a surgical department for suspected appendicitis).

Age-related macular disease (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy (DR) are prevalent diseases. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) related retinal neovascularization is a common feature in both. Consequently, both pathologies are treated with anti-VEGF therapy.

On-line coupling of immobilized cytochrome P450 microreactor and capillary electrophoresis: A promising tool for drug development.

In this work, the combination of an immobilized enzyme microreactor (IMER) based on the clinically important isoform cytochrome P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) with capillary electrophoresis (CE) is presented. The CYP2C9 was attached to magnetic SiMAG-carboxyl microparticles using the carbodiimide method. The formation of an IMER in the inlet part of the separation capillary was ensured by two permanent magnets fixed in a cassette from the CE apparatus in the repulsive arrangement.

Parity not perfect: making sense of substance addiction equity for case managers.

In October of 2008, the Paul Wellstone and Pete Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act became a law. It represents a groundbreaking change in substance abuse treatment policy because it redistributes the bulk of costs for substance abuse treatment from the federal government to group health plans. The law required that employee and public insurances that cover health or surgical care also provide comparable terms of coverage and treatment limitations for substance abuse.

Deoxynivalenol and its toxicity.

Deoxynivalenol (DON) is one of several mycotoxins produced by certain Fusarium species that frequently infect corn, wheat, oats, barley, rice, and other grains in the field or during storage. The exposure risk to human is directly through foods of plant origin (cereal grains) or indirectly through foods of animal origin (kidney, liver, milk, eggs). It has been detected in buckwheat, popcorn, sorgum, triticale, and other food products including flour, bread, breakfast cereals, noodles, infant foods, pancakes, malt and beer.

Complexes of glutathione with heavy metal ions as a new biochemical marker of aquatic environment pollution.

Reduced glutathione (GSH) plays a number of key roles in many biochemical pathways. This peptide is highly reactive and forms conjugates with other molecules via its sulfhydryl moiety. The interactions of the common heavy metal pollutant Cd(II) with GSH were determined by using the Brdicka reaction to evaluate whether this technique would be suitable as a biomarker.

Effect of naturally mouldy wheat or fungi administration on metallothioneins level in brain tissues of rats.

Objective: The aim of this study is to determine level of metallothioneins (MTs) in brain tissues of rats administered by feed mixtures with different content of mouldy wheat or fungi.

Design: Selected male laboratory rats of Wistar albino at age of 28 days were used in our experiments. The rats were administered by feed mixtures with different content of vitamins, naturally mouldy wheat or fungi for 28 days.

Changes in metallothionein level in rat hepatic tissue after administration of natural mouldy wheat.

Mycotoxins are secondary metabolites produced by microfungi that are capable of causing disease and death in humans and other animals. This work was aimed at investigation of influence of mouldy wheat contaminated by pathogenic fungi producing mycotoxins on metallothionein levels in hepatic tissue of rats. The rats were administrating feed mixtures with different contents of vitamins or naturally mouldy wheat for 28 days.
