The current investigation involved the development of activated carbon, juglans regia activated carbon (JRACs), from walnut shells, scientifically known as Juglans regia. The ZnO nanorods were loaded on the activated carbon and referred to as ZnO@JRACs. Desulfurization efficiency was assessed through batch adsorption and compared to commercial activated carbon known as DARCO.

International Alliance of Urolithiasis (IAU) guidelines on the management of pediatric urolithiasis.

The aim of this study was to construct the sixth in a series of guidelines on the treatment of urolithiasis by the International Alliance of Urolithiasis (IAU) that by providing a clinical framework for the management of pediatric patients with urolithiasis based on the best available published literature. All recommendations were summarized following a systematic review and assessment of literature in the PubMed database from January 1952 to December 2023. Each generated recommendation was graded using a modified GRADE methodology.

Twelve tips for strengthening global equity in health professions education publication.

Despite recent calls to engage in scholarship with attention to anti-racism, equity, and social justice at a global level in Health Professions Education (HPE), the field has made few significant advances in incorporating the views of the so-called "Other" in understanding the nature, origin, and scope of knowledge as well as the epistemic justification of knowledge production. Editors, authors, and reviewers must take responsibility for questioning existing systems and structures, specifically about how they diffuse the knowledge of a few and silence the knowledge of many. This article presents 12 recommendations proposed by (GSCAC), a group of HPE professionals, representing countries in the Global South, to help the Global North enact practical changes to become more inclusive and engage in authentic and representative work in HPE publishing.

Purpose: The Arab experience is understudied because until 2024 Arabs were categorized as White on the U.S. Census, leading to diminished documentation of their personal experiences.

Validation of a modified obstetric comorbidity index for prediction of postpartum adverse events including fetal morbidity - a retrospective cohort study from Qatar.

Background: The Obstetric Comorbidity Index (OBCMI) is an internationally validated scoring system for maternal risk factors intended to reliably predict the occurrence of severe maternal morbidity (SMM). This retrospective cohort study applied the OBCMI to pregnant women in Qatar to validate its performance in predicting SMM and cumulative fetal morbidity.

Methods: Data from 1000 women who delivered in July 2021 in a large tertiary centre was extracted from medical records.

Outcomes Following Surgical Fixation of Distal Radius Fractures in Patients With Chronic Kidney Disease.

Purpose: Moderate-to-severe chronic kidney disease (CKD, stages III-IV) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD or CKD stage V) are known to be independent risk factors for fragility fracture. Altered bone and mineral metabolism contributes to greater complications and mortality rates in the setting of fractures, although most existing literature is limited to hip fractures. We hypothesized that patients with moderate-to-severe CKD or ESRD would have greater complication rates after surgical treatment of distal radius fractures compared with those without CKD.

Decolonial framework for applying reflexivity and positionality in global health research.

Contemporary research practices link to colonial and imperialist knowledge creation and production and may promote harmful perspectives on marginalized and oppressed groups. We present a framework for a decolonial approach to research in global health and health promotion applicable across research settings. This framework is aimed at anticipating and alleviating potentially harmful practices inherent in dominant research methods.

Emerging trends in research and development on earth abundant materials for ammonia degradation coupled with H generation.

Ammonia, as an essential and economical fuel, is a key intermediate for the production of innumerable nitrogen-based compounds. Such compounds have found vast applications in the agricultural world, biological world (amino acids, proteins, and DNA), and various other chemical transformations. However, unlike other compounds, the decomposition of ammonia is widely recognized as an important step towards a safe and sustainable environment.

Correlates of Menarcheal Age in a Psychiatric Sample of Adolescents.

Early pubertal timing is associated with more adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and increased risk for psychopathology during adolescence. However, most work to date has used community or epidemiological samples, and it remains unclear whether these associations persist in acute clinical samples. The present study examined associations between age at menarche and ACEs, psychiatric symptoms, and emotion regulation difficulties in a sample of N = 140 adolescents on a psychiatric inpatient unit.

Why Competency Frameworks Are Insufficiently Nuanced for Health Equity Teaching and Assessment.

This article suggests how competency-based medical education should robustly integrate health equity by focusing on physicians' responsibilities to (1) know why and how underlying structural mechanisms contribute to health equity and then (2) take action to achieve health equity in their practice. This article first canvasses currently available frameworks for helping trainees cultivate these 2 specific skills of discernment and action. This article then offers strategies for teaching and assessing these skills in specific learning activities.

Influence of electrolyte imbalance on regional wall motion abnormalities in STEMI patients of North Indian origin.

Assessing regional wall motion abnormalities (RWMA) in the myocardium may provide early diagnosis and treat chronic remodeling in STEMI patients. We assessed RWMA in 217 subjects with anterior STEMI admitted to Era University Hospital in Lucknow, UP, India. Besides abnormalities in the LAD territory, sub-sets of patients exhibited diffuse regional myocardial dysfunction.

Asian Conscientization: Reflections on the Experiences of Asian Faculty in Academic Medicine.

Issue: Asians have experienced a rise in racialized hate crimes due to the anti-Asian rhetoric that has accompanied the COVID-19 pandemic. However, there has been little acknowledgement of anti-Asian discrimination within the medical education community. While anti-Asian hate is not new or unfamiliar to us, four authors of Asian descent, it has given us an opportunity to reflect on how we have been complicit in and resistant to the larger racial narratives that circulate in our communities.

Phenomenon: Students become physicians not only by mastering medical knowledge, but also through a process of Professional Identity Formation (PIF). In this study, we used the conceptual framework of Jarvis-Selinger et al. to explore the impact of COVID, as a major public health crisis, on the PIF of preclinical medical students in our country.

Topics in Antivax and Provax Discourse: Yearlong Synoptic Study of COVID-19 Vaccine Tweets.

Background: Developing an understanding of the public discourse on COVID-19 vaccination on social media is important not only for addressing the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic but also for future pathogen outbreaks. There are various research efforts in this domain, although, a need still exists for a comprehensive topic-wise analysis of tweets in favor of and against COVID-19 vaccines.

Objective: This study characterizes the discussion points in favor of and against COVID-19 vaccines posted on Twitter during the first year of the pandemic.

A Bioluminescent Activity Dependent (BLADe) Platform for Converting Neuronal Activity to Photoreceptor Activation.

We developed a platform that utilizes a calcium-dependent luciferase to convert neuronal activity into activation of light sensing domains within the same cell. The platform is based on a luciferase variant with high light emission split by calmodulin-M13 sequences that depends on influx of calcium ions (Ca) for functional reconstitution. In the presence of its luciferin, coelenterazine (CTZ), Ca influx results in light emission that drives activation of photoreceptors, including optogenetic channels and LOV domains.

Editors as Gatekeepers: One Medical Education Journal's Efforts to Resist Racism in Scholarly Publishing.

Purpose: Journals have begun to expand the racial diversity of editors as a first step to countering institutional racism. Given the power editors hold as gatekeepers, a diverse team helps ensure that minoritized scholars have equal opportunity to contribute. In 2021, Teaching and Learning in Medicine ( TLM ) created an editorial internship for racially minoritized individuals.

Whiteness theory and the (in)visible hierarchy in medical education.

Context: The theory of whiteness in medical education has largely been ignored, yet its power continues to influence learners within our medical curricula and our patients and trainees within our health systems. Its influence is even more powerful given the fact that society maintains a 'possessive investment' in its presence. In combination, these (in)visible forces create environments that favour White individuals at the exclusion of all others, and as health professions educators and researchers, we have the responsibility to uncover how and why these influences continue to pervade medical education.

25-Hydroxyvitamin-D deficiency in chronic kidney disease stages III, IV, and V in South Asian population: a retrospective cohort.

Objective: Vitamin D deficiency in Chronic Kidney Disease is a known fact, but the data regarding the prevalence and extent of vitamin D deficiency in different stages of Chronic Kidney Disease is scarce. This leads to a delay in addressing this issue. We conducted this study to assess vitamin-D deficiency in different stages of Chronic Kidney Disease to improve the evidence available to Physicians and Nephrologists which can help them better address this common finding in Chronic Kidney Disease.

A mobile app as support for pelvic floor muscle training started prior to radical prostatectomy.

Objective: To evaluate the usefulness of a mobile app to support pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) started prior to radical prostatectomy (RP).

Materials And Methods: A prospective cohort study conducted in Sweden from June 2018 to February 2021 including men for whom RP was planned within 12 months. Users responded anonymously to questionnaires at baseline, 1 and 3 months.

Antiviral and antiretroviral drug shortages amidst COVID-19: How Africa is struggling.

Antiviral drugs are of paramount importance in the accomplishment of the vision of zero new cases of COVID-19 globally, through sustainable retaliation against viral diseases. However, several challenges currently exist in Africa which include insufficient infrastructure, deteriorating health systems, and rising costs of healthcare delivery with concomitant rising inequity with regards to access to health services amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic itself has stimulated an increased use of phytotherapy in Africa as a result of essential drug shortages that have been attributed to a plethora of contributing factors such as travel restrictions, reduced per capita income as well as increased expenditure on transport.
