Prevalence of antibiotic-resistant organisms in Canadian Hospitals. Comparison of point-prevalence survey results from 2010, 2012, and 2016.

Objective: Point-prevalence surveys for infection or colonization with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE), extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteriaceae, carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CREs), and for Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) were conducted in Canadian hospitals in 2010 and 2012 to better understanding changes in the epidemiology of antimicrobial-resistant organisms (AROs), which is crucial for public health and care management.

Methods: A third survey of the same AROs in adult inpatients in Canadian hospitals with ≥50 beds was performed in February 2016. Data on participating hospitals and patient cases were obtained using standard criteria and case definitions.

Modified Inside-Out Technique for Continued Use of Chronically Occluded Upper Central Veins.

This report describes a 2-step, inside-out procedure for upper body central venous access in patients with chronic central venous occlusions. Blunt cephalad dissection through the mediastinum was achieved with a curved metal cannula and guide wire followed by percutaneous puncture of an open snare from a right supraclavicular approach and dilation of the tract for a tunneled central venous catheter insertion. Of 9 patients, all had a successful placement of a tunneled central venous catheter using this method.

Feasibility of an innovative electronic mobile system to assist health workers to collect accurate, complete and timely data in a malaria control programme in a remote setting in Kenya.

Background: The cornerstone of decision making aimed at improving health services is accurate and timely health information. The Ministry of Public Health and Sanitation in Kenya decided to pilot feasibility of Fionet, an innovation that integrates diagnostics, data capture and cloud services, in its malaria control programme to demonstrate usability and feasibility by primary level workers in a remote setting in Kenya.

Methods: Eleven sites comprising one sub-district hospital, ten health centres and dispensaries were selected in three districts of Kisumu County to participate.

Crowdsourcing the General Public for Large Scale Molecular Pathology Studies in Cancer.

Background: Citizen science, scientific research conducted by non-specialists, has the potential to facilitate biomedical research using available large-scale data, however validating the results is challenging. The Cell Slider is a citizen science project that intends to share images from tumors with the general public, enabling them to score tumor markers independently through an internet-based interface.

Methods: From October 2012 to June 2014, 98,293 Citizen Scientists accessed the Cell Slider web page and scored 180,172 sub-images derived from images of 12,326 tissue microarray cores labeled for estrogen receptor (ER).

A follow-up survey was done in November 2012 to determine whether there were any changes in the prevalence of these organisms; we also determined the prevalence of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteriaceae, and carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CREs). Associations between prevalence and infection prevention and control policies were evaluated in logistic regression models.
