Tibia and lumbar vertebrae of rats sacrificed 2 days after their 13-day space flight on Cosmos-1887 were examined histomorphometrically. It was found that the exposure led to osteoporosis of the primary and secondary spongiosa of tibia proximal metaphyses and early signs of bone reduction in the lumbar vertebrae spongiosa. The major cause of osteoporosis was inhibition of bone neoformation which was indicated by a lower number and activity of osteoblasts.

Using a semi-automatic image analyzer MOP Videoplan, a quantitative histomorphometric investigation of sponge bone of tibial metaphyses, iliac crests and lumbar vertebrae of monkeys kept for 14 days in the head-down position (at -10 degrees) was carried out. This exposure was found to cause spongy bone reduction in all the above bones. The lowered number and activity of osteoblasts as well as the reduced amount of osteoids during the exposure give evidence that the inhibition of bone neoformation makes a significant contribution to osteopenia.

The work was aimed at studying the effect exerted by elevated concentrations of glucose, yeast extract and acetate on the growth of Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. galleriae, strain 69-6, and on the formation of spores and crystals by it. Glucose concentrations from 30 to 100 g per litre did not prevent spore formation.
