In this study, we investigated the cytotoxic effect of highly soluble dextran-coated CeO nanoparticles on human fetal lung fibroblasts MRC-5. We examined individual nanoparticle-treated cells by Raman spectroscopy and analyzed Raman spectra using non-negative principal component analysis and k-means clustering. In this way, we determined dose-dependent differences between treated cells, which were reflected through the intensity change of lipid, phospholipid and RNA-related Raman modes.

Selective cytotoxicity of ZnO nanoparticles among different cell types and cancer and non-cancerous cells has been demonstrated earlier. In the view of anticancer potential of ZnO nanoparticles and their presence in numerous industrial products, it is of great importance to carefully evaluate their effects and mechanisms of action in both cancerous and healthy cells. In this paper, the effects of ZnO nanoparticles on cancerous HeLa and non-cancerous MRC-5 cells are investigated by studying the changes in the vibrational properties of the cells using Raman spectroscopy.

Purpose: Every advanced oxidation process (AOP) has its limitations in water purification. Novel designs with simultaneous application of different AOPs can offer better solutions for cleaner water.

Methods: We have comparatively studied two advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) on decolourisation of Reactive Orange 16 (RO 16) azo dye pollutant from water: gas plasma treatment by low power atmospheric pressure plasma using novel plasma needle configuration, and semiconductor heterogeneous photocatalysis using titanium dioxide (TiO) nanopowders.

The design of nanoparticles for application in medical diagnostics and therapy requires a thorough understanding of various aspects of nanoparticle-cell interactions. In this work, two unconventional methods for the study of nanoparticle effects on cells, Raman spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM), were employed to track the molecular and morphological changes that are caused by the interaction between cervical carcinoma-derived HeLa cells and two types of cerium dioxide (CeO) nanoparticles, ones with dextran coating and the others with no coating. Multivariate statistical analyses of Raman spectra, such as principal component analysis and partial least squares regression, were applied in order to extract the variations in the vibrational features of cell biomolecules and through them, the changes in biomolecular content and conformation.
