Bone loss resulting in increased risk for osteoporosis is a major health issue worldwide. Chocolate is a rich source of antioxidant and antiinflammatory flavonoids and dietary minerals with the potential to benefit bone health. However, other chocolate constituents such as cocoa butter, sugar, and methylxanthines may be detrimental to bone.

Antiproliferative and antioxidant activities and mycosporine-like amino acid (MAA) profiles of methanol extracts from edible wild-harvested (Chondrus crispus, Mastocarpus stellatus, Palmaria palmata) and cultivated (C. crispus) marine red macroalgae were studied herein. Palythine, asterina-330, shinorine, palythinol, porphyra-334 and usujirene MAAs were identified in the macroalgal extracts by LC/MS/MS.

Objective: To determine the effect of loss of ovarian function and mechanical loading (ie, inactivity) alone or in combination on bone mass and strength.

Design: Mature (aged 6 mo) rats were ovariectomized to induce loss of ovarian function and bone. Hindlimb unloading (HLU) was used to determine the effect of mechanical unloading and reloading on bone mass and strength.

The flaxseed lignan secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG) and mammalian lignans enterodiol (ED) and enterolactone (EL) were previously shown to be effective antioxidants against DNA damage and lipid peroxidation. Others reported inhibition of activated cell chemiluminescence by supra-physiological concentrations of secoisolariciresinol (SECO), ED and EL. Thus, we evaluated the antioxidant efficacy of potential physiological concentrations of SDG, SECO, ED and EL against 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH()), and 2,2'-azo-bis(2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride (AAPH)-initiated peroxyl radical plasmid DNA damage and phosphatidylcholine liposome lipid peroxidation.

Dietary Laminaria and Porphyra sp. have been reported to reduce the risk of intestinal or mammary cancer in animal studies. Algal anticarcinogenicity may involve effects on cell proliferation and antioxidant activity.

Previously, we reported that a 1-butanol soluble extract of the edible red alga Palmaria palmata, known as dulse, exhibited hydroxyl and stable free radical scavenging activity as well as inhibition of lipid peroxidation, attributed to the reducing activity and polyphenol content of the dulse extract. In the present study, we evaluated the antioxidant and antiproliferative activities of two grades of dulse harvested from Canadian Maritime locations differing in UV radiation exposure (i.e.

Previously, 8% fish oil blend diets, compared to butter and soybean oil blend diets, reduced specific antioxidant enzyme activities and tissue susceptibility to in vitro oxidative stress in spontaneously hypertensive (SHR) and Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rats. Moreover, high cholesterol (5.0 g/kg diet) diets protected against in vitro tissue lipid oxidation.

Due to the potential for dietary fat source to alter plasma lipids and tissue antioxidant status, we hypothesized that blends of saturated, n-6 and n-3 fats with cholesterol would affect LDL and tissue susceptibility to in vitro oxidation. The effects of dietary fat blends of butter (B), beef tallow (T), soybean oil (SBO) or menhaden oil (MO) and cholesterol on systolic blood pressure (SBP), plasma lipoproteins and tissue susceptibility to glutathione (GSH) depletion and lipid peroxidation (TBARS) were examined in spontaneously hypertensive (SHR) and Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rats. SBP in SHRs was higher (p < 0.
