Background: While there is evidence of both purifying and balancing selection in immune defense genes, large-scale genetic diversity in antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), an important part of the innate immune system released from dermal glands in the skin, has remained uninvestigated. Stochastic effects from demographic processes and selection are expected to shape the distribution of genetic variation in spatially heterogeneous environments. As the amount of genetic variation is central for long-term persistence of populations, understanding how these processes affect variation over large-scale geographical gradients is pivotal. Although adaptive divergence along environmental gradients has repeatedly been demonstrated, the role of post-glacial colonization routes in determining phenotypic variation along gradients has received little attention. Here, we used a hierarchical Q -F approach to separate the roles of adaptive and neutral processes in shaping phenotypic variation in moor frog (Rana arvalis) larval life histories along a 1,700 km latitudinal gradient across northern Europe. This species has colonized Scandinavia via two routes with a contact zone in northern Sweden.

Background: Gene duplications are frequently observed in the Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) of many species, and as a consequence loci belonging to the same MHC class are often too similar to tell apart. In birds, single locus genotyping of MHC genes has proven difficult due to concerted evolution homogenizing sequences at different loci. But studies on evolutionary history, mode of selection and heterozygosity correlations on the MHC cannot be performed before it is possible to analyse duplicated genes separately.

Background: The Brazilian Atlantic Forest is highly endangered and only about 7% of the original forest remains, most of which consists of fragments of secondary forest. Small mammals in the Atlantic Forest have differential responses to this process of fragmentation and conversion of forest into anthropogenic habitats, and have varying abilities to occupy the surrounding altered habitats. We investigated the influence of vegetation structure on the micro-scale distribution of five small mammal species in six secondary forest remnants in a landscape of fragmented Atlantic Forest.

Allelic diversity at major histocompatibility complex (MHC) genes is thought to be maintained by balancing selection over long periods of time, even across multiple speciation events. Trans-species sharing of MHC alleles among genera has been supported by many studies on mammals and fish, but in rodents, the results are ambiguous. We investigated natural levels of MHC- DRB variability and evolutionary processes in the wood mouse (Apodemus sylvaticus) and the yellow-necked mouse (Apodemus flavicollis), which are common, sympatric murid rodents in European forests.
