It was shown that protoxylem vessels lignified in the early stage of vascular bundle differentiation, metaxylem vessel and fibre walls initiated lignification from the middle lamella and cell corners after the completion of vascular bundle differentiation. Most of the parenchyma cell walls lignified after the stem reached its full height, while a few parenchyma cells remained non-lignified even in the mature culm.
