Purpose: Textbook outcome (TO) is a composite quality measurement of outcomes for evaluating surgical procedures. We investigated whether TO can be used to predict outcomes after curative resection for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) in elderly patients.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 105 patients who underwent curative esophagectomy for ESCC from 2005 to 2020.

Purpose: Textbook outcome (TO) is a composite quality measurement of short-term outcomes for evaluating surgical procedures. We investigated whether TO can be used to predict outcomes after curative gastric cancer (GC) surgery in older adults.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 492 consecutive patients who underwent curative gastrectomy for GC from 2005 to 2017.

Aim: The 5-factor modified frailty index (MFI-5) is a stratification tool to evaluate a patient's frailty. This study determined whether the MFI-5 is associated with short- and long-term outcomes after curative gastrectomy in patients with gastric cancer.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 447 consecutive patients who underwent curative gastrectomy, and evaluated their overall survival (OS), relapse-free survival (RFS) and cancer-specific survival.

Purpose: Textbook outcome (TO) has been used to define achievement of multiple "ideal" or "optimal" surgical and postoperative quality measures from the patient's perspective. However, TO has not been reported for their impact on survival in elderly, including CRC surgery. This study determined whether TO is associated with long-term outcomes after curative colorectomy in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC).

Background: Increased F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake in the bone marrow (BM) on positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) clinically reflects increased BM metabolism owing to systemic inflammation, bacterial infection, anemia, and cytokine-producing tumors. The association between FDG uptake in the BM and prognosis after esophagectomy for esophageal cancer has not been investigated.

Methods: This study included 651 patients who underwent PET/CT before any treatment and McKeown esophagectomy for esophageal cancer between June 2007 and August 2021.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how a poor parent-daughter relationship can be linked to hyperglycemia in pregnancy (HIP), considering factors like childhood adverse experiences and their impact on maternal health.
  • Conducted in Japan with over 6,000 participants, the research utilized questionnaires to assess parental satisfaction and diagnosed HIP based on local criteria.
  • Findings indicated that pregnant women with dissatisfaction in their parent-daughter relationships showed a higher association with HIP, particularly those without a history of psychiatric disorders.

Background: The Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS) is a simple and validated tool for assessing frailty, and higher CFS scores are correlated with worse perioperative outcomes after cardiovascular surgery. However, the relationship between the CFS scores and postoperative outcomes after esophagectomy remain unclear.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed data from 561 patients with esophageal cancer (EC) who underwent resection from August 2010 to August 2020.

Backgrounds: A history of childhood abuse and subsequent poor relationship with parents in adulthood among pregnant women is a known risk factor for postpartum depression (PPD). Although parent-daughter relationship can change during pregnancy, little is known whether the trajectories have an impact on PPD. The aim of this study is to examine whether trajectories of parent-daughter relationship during pregnancy are associated with PPD in Japanese mothers.

Background: Obturator hernia is a life-threatening condition, requiring emergency intervention due to strangulation, if non-invasive repair for strangulation cannot be complete. Change from emergency surgery to elective surgery using minimal non-invasive options can greatly contribute to perioperative safety and curability of the underlying disease.

Case Presentation: 12 cases of strangulated obturator hernia from April 2013 to February 2020 with male:female patient ratio of 0:12.

  • - The study explores the differing perceptions of self-training and overtime work among doctors of varying experience levels in response to new regulations in Japan aimed at reducing overtime.
  • - A survey conducted among 1,256 members of the Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology found that younger doctors (≤5 years) believe these regulations may improve service quality, while experienced doctors (≥20 years) fear quality may decline.
  • - The findings highlight a significant generational divide in attitudes towards work regulations, suggesting that more experienced doctors are concerned about the impact on medical training and service quality due to reduced working hours.

The reduction in the use of neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) during the COVID-19 outbreak has been reported, but whether this phenomenon is widespread across countries is unclear. Using a large-scale inpatient database in Japan, we analysed the intensive neonatal care volume and the number of preterm births for weeks 10-17 vs weeks 2-9 (during and before the outbreak) of 2020 with adjustment for the trends during the same period of 2019. We found statistically significant reductions in the numbers of NICU admissions (adjusted incidence rate ratio (aIRR), 0.
