Aims/introduction: The study aim was to investigate sulfonylurea prescription patterns in elderly patients (age ≥65 years) with type 2 diabetes mellitus in Japan. Sulfonylurea use among older adults has been insufficiently examined, despite the associated risks of hypoglycemia.

Materials And Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional survey entailed analysis of Japanese pharmacy data, extracted from the Musubi database, for patients (age 20-100 years) prescribed sulfonylureas between November 2022 and October 2023.

We report the case of a 26-year-old male who presented with acute pancreatitis during the course of treatment for pancolitic ulcerative colitis (UC) with a time-dependent mesalazine formulation, prednisolone and azathioprine (AZA). Despite a review of his clinical history and various tests, the cause of pancreatitis could not be determined. Since drug-induced pancreatitis was considered possible, administration of the time-dependent mesalazine preparation and AZA was discontinued, and conservative treatment for acute pancreatitis was performed.

A 75-year-old Japanese woman with polycythemia vera was admitted to our hospital in January 2003 with suspected pulmonary thromboembolism.
