Article Synopsis
  • Combo treatments with androgen receptor inhibitors and hormone therapy are now the main way to treat advanced prostate cancer, but some patients still need better options.
  • For patients with fewer tumors, using local radiation may help improve their survival chances, and sometimes they can take a break from other treatments.
  • Future plans involve using detailed genetic information to help doctors decide the best treatment for patients based on their specific risks.

Article Synopsis
  • - A 65-year-old man with a history of kidney transplant was admitted to the ICU due to a severe bacterial infection and tested positive for COVID-19, but showed improvement and was moved to the general ward after three days.
  • - On the fourth day, he developed abdominal pain, and a mass was detected in his abdomen.
  • - By the fifth day, imaging revealed a rare and extensive rectus sheath hematoma caused by bleeding from a small artery; treatment involved stopping anticoagulation and performing arterial embolization, highlighting the risk for such conditions in transplant patients on blood thinners.

Background/aim: Pembrolizumab, a second-line therapy for platinum-refractory advanced urothelial carcinoma (UC), is needed to improve objective response rate. Hence, it is crucial to identify optimal predictive biomarkers of responses. This study aimed to clarify the predictive value and role of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) in selecting patients with advanced UC who might benefit clinically from pembrolizumab therapy.

Article Synopsis
  • Patients who are immunosuppressed, like kidney transplant recipients, typically have lower antibody responses after SARS-CoV-2 vaccinations, but responses improve with more doses.
  • In a study of Japanese kidney transplant patients, antibody positivity rates increased to 75.0% after the fourth dose and 81.5% after the fifth dose.
  • Those who developed antibodies after their fourth vaccination had higher body mass index and better kidney function, suggesting that further doses are beneficial for improving immunity against COVID-19.

Article Synopsis
  • * After 10 days, he experienced resurgence of fever and a cough, ultimately requiring hospitalization 27 days after symptom onset due to worsening respiratory issues.
  • * Hospital treatment included steroid therapy and other medications; he improved and was discharged after 14 days, indicating his respiratory issues were likely due to pneumonia linked to his immune response post-COVID-19.

Introduction: Simple plasma exchange (PE) with fresh-frozen plasma replacement allows antibody removal for ABO-incompatible living donor kidney transplantation, but is associated with a high incidence of allergic reactions. We developed, implemented, and evaluated a protocol for safe preoperative PE.

Methods: The protocol comprised pretreatment (125 mg methylprednisolone infusion, 400 mg acetaminophen and 30 mg diphenhydramine orally) with a replacement fluid rate < 20 mL/min.

Rationale: The purpose of this case report is to describe a case of successful early rehabilitation intervention for simultaneous liver and kidney transplantation (SLKT).

Patient Concerns: A 51-year-old Japanese man was diagnosed with Caroli disease 27 years ago. Hemodialysis was introduced due to end-stage renal disease 17 years ago.

Intraductal carcinoma of the prostate, a unique histopathologic entity that is often observed (especially in advanced prostate cancer), is characterized by the proliferation of malignant cells within normal acini or ducts surrounded by a basement membrane. Intraductal carcinoma of the prostate is almost invariably associated with an adjacent high-grade carcinoma and is occasionally observed as an isolated subtype. Intraductal carcinoma of the prostate has been demonstrated to be an independent poor prognostic factor for all stages of cancer, whether localized, de novo metastatic, or castration-resistant.

Introduction: Testicular germ cell cancer has a relatively good prognosis even if visceral and/or lymph node metastases are present thanks to chemotherapy. Yet chemotherapy can lead to various adverse events. Therefore, it is crucial to distinguish whether a suspected metastatic disease is metastasis or not.

The colloidal glass transition, ionic transport, and optical properties of soft glassy colloidal arrays (SGCAs) that consist of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)-grafted silica nanoparticles (PMMA-g-NPs) and a room-temperature ionic liquid, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethane sulfonyl)amide ([C(2)mim][NTf(2)]), were investigated. At lower particle concentrations, PMMA-g-NPs were well-suspended in the IL without any aggregation or sedimentation, and the dilute suspensions showed liquid-like behavior. However, above a certain particle concentration, the suspensions became solidified and exhibited different structural colors depending on the particle concentrations.

Background: We report a case of bilateral retinal detachment after laser in situ keratomileusis(LASIK).

Case: A 49-year-old man received multiple laser photocoagulation for retinal lattice degeneration in both eyes and retinal tears in the left eye. He underwent bilateral LASIK in another country about 6 months after the laser photocoagulation.
