Article Synopsis
- New binary chromium sulfide (CrS) has been synthetically created through the reaction of CrS and sulfur mixtures at high temperature (800 °C) and pressure (13 GPa).
- CrS features an orthorhombic unit cell and has a unique structure characterized by edge-sharing octahedral dimers of CrS, forming a three-dimensional arrangement.
- The sulfur atoms within CrS are arranged into S disulfide ions, exhibiting specific S-S bond distances, and the CrS structure is related to the crystal structure of marcasite (FeS), but with some vacancies in the metal sites.
