The ever-increasing chemoresistance of osteosarcoma (OS) has been observed in the recent decades, impeding OS therapeutic improvement and posing an urgency to exploit to the alternative and/or supplementary therapies for the optimization of OS chemotherapeutic regimen. The chemical reactivity of glass surfaces is often studied with elemental analysis techniques, and although such characterization methods provide insights on compositional changes from exposure to specific chemical conditions, molecule-specific chemical reactions are not determined unambiguously. This study demonstrates the use of reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS) to detect molecular species on alkali-free boroaluminosilicate and alkali aluminosilicate glasses, using acetic acid vapor as a model reactant to probe reaction sites at the surface with or without pretreatment by aqueous solutions of varied pH. With the assistance of the theoretical calculation of spectral changes based on refractive indices of bulk materials, it was possible to identify the molecular species being removed and produced at the glass surface.

As the global population ages, the incidence of age-related musculoskeletal diseases continues to increase, driven by numerous complex and poorly understood factors. WNT-1 inducible secreted protein 1 (WISP-1), a secreted matrix protein, plays a critical role in the growth and development of the musculoskeletal system, including chondrogenesis, osteogenesis, and myogenesis. Numerous in vivo and in vitro studies have demonstrated that WISP-1 is significantly upregulated in age-related musculoskeletal conditions, such as osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, and sarcopenia, suggesting its involvement in the pathogenesis of these diseases.

The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of differentially expressed miR-8485 on chondrocyte inflammation in osteoarthritis (OA) and its underlying pathological mechanisms. MiR-8485, which was downregulated in OA, was identified by microarray analysis, and was also found to be decreased in IL-1β-induced C28/I2 cells. miR-8485 down-regulation or IL-1β treated of C28/I2 cells induces a decrease in cellular activity, an increase in apoptosis, an elevation in Cleaved caspase-3, MMP13, and ADAMTS5 protein levels, a decrease in Collagen II and Aggrecan levels, and an increase in the levels of pro-inflammatory factors TNF-α and IL-6.
