Human activities in the last century have intensified global nitrogen deposition, resulting in the degradation of ecosystem function and loss of biodiversity worldwide. Nitrogen addition is a crucial method for examining the effects of atmospheric nitrogen deposition on species composition and structure of soil microbiome and biotic community, as exogenous nitrogen inputs can trigger cascading effects on ecosystem functions. In a 6-year experiment, we evaluated the impact of nitrogen addition on soil microbial-plant-insect systems in desert steppes.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores part-set cuing effects in spatial memory, an area where such effects are uncommon, challenging existing theories based on lexical stimuli.
  • Two types of memory scenes were created, differing in interitem associations, to examine how part-set cues impact tasks like free recall and recognition.
  • Results showed that matrix cues hindered performance in high-association scenes but not in low-association ones, while scene cues always enhanced reconstruction, supporting theories about retrieval strategy and the importance of interitem associations in spatial memory.

In this study, a simple, green, and low-cost room temperature synthesis of broccoli-like silver nanoflowers (AgNF) with a particle size of about 300-500 nm was developed using plant-derived caffeic acid as a reducing agent and polyvinylpyrrolidone as a dispersant under ultrasound assistance. The flower clusters covered by small nanocrystals of 20-50 nm significantly enhance the electromagnetic field signals. AgNF was deposited on the surface of silicon wafers as a surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy sensor for the detection of probe molecules such as rhodamine 6G (R6G) and malachite green with high sensitivity, homogeneity, and reproducibility.

Different from the common perspective of average structure, we propose that the locally elongated metal-oxygen bonds induced by La-to-Y substitution to a Lewis acid α-YBO generate medium-strength basic sites. Experimentally, NH- and CO-TPD experiments prove that the La doping of α-YLaBO (0 ≤ ≤ 0.24) results in the emergence of new medium-strength basic sites and the increasing La concentration modifies the number, not the strength, of the acidic and basic sites.
