Bio-based eco-friendly cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) gain an increasing interest for diverse applications. We report the results of an investigation of hydrogels spontaneously formed by the self-assembly of carboxylated CNCs in the presence of CaCl using several complementary techniques: rheometry, isothermal titration calorimetry, FTIR-spectroscopy, cryo-electron microscopy, cryo-electron tomography, and polarized optical microscopy. Increasing CaCl concentration was shown to induce a strong increase in the storage modulus of CNC hydrogels accompanied by the growth of CNC aggregates included in the network.

Unlabelled: During infection, the giant phiKZ phage forms a specialized structure at the center of the host cell called the phage nucleus. This structure is crucial for safeguarding viral DNA against bacterial nucleases and for segregating the transcriptional activities of late genes. Here, we describe a morphological entity, the early phage infection (EPI) vesicle, which appears to be responsible for earlier gene segregation at the beginning of the infection process.

Dual networks formed by entangled polymer chains and wormlike surfactant micelles have attracted increasing interest in their application as thickeners in various fields since they combine the advantages of both polymer- and surfactant-based fluids. In particular, such polymer-surfactant mixtures are of great interest as novel hydraulic fracturing fluids with enhanced properties. In this study, we demonstrated the effect of the chemical composition of an uncharged polymer poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and pH on the rheological properties and structure of its mixtures with a cationic surfactant erucyl bis(hydroxyethyl)methylammonium chloride already exploited in fracturing operations.

We report on the effect of a hydrocarbon (n-dodecane) on the rheological properties and shapes of the hybrid wormlike micelles (WLMs) of a surfactant potassium oleate with an embedded polymer poly(4-vinylpyridine). With and without hydrocarbon solutions, the hybrid micelles exhibit the same values of viscosity at shear rates typical for hydraulic fracturing (HF) tests, as solutions of polymer-free WLMs. Therefore, similar to WLMs of surfactants, they could be applied as thickeners in HF fluids without breakers.

The effect of primary amino acid sequence in recombinant spidroins on their spatial organization is crucial for the fabrication of artificial fibers and fibrous materials. This study focuses on the rheological properties of aqueous and alcoholic solutions of recombinant analogs of natural spidroins (rS1/9 and rS2/12), as well as the structure of their films and nanofibrous materials. Non-Newtonian flow behavior of aqueous solutions of these proteins was observed at certain concentrations in contrast to their solutions in hexafluoroisopropanol.

In response to adverse environmental factors, cells actively produce Dps proteins which form ordered complexes (biocrystals) with bacterial DNA to protect the genome. The effect of biocrystallization has been described extensively in the scientific literature; furthermore, to date, the structure of the Dps-DNA complex has been established in detail in vitro using plasmid DNA. In the present work, for the first time, Dps complexes with genomic DNA were studied in vitro using cryo-electron tomography.

Salt-induced structural transformation of charged hybrid surfactant/polymer micelles formed by potassium oleate and poly(4-vinylpyridine) was investigated by cryo-TEM, SANS with contrast variation, DLS, and 2D NOESY. Cryo-TEM data show, that at small salt concentration beads-on-string aggregates on polymer chains are formed. KCl induces the transformation of those aggregates into rods, which is due to the screening of the electrostatic repulsion between similarly charged beads by added salt.

Nicotinic acetylcholine receptor of α7 type (α7-nAChR) presented in the nervous and immune systems and epithelium is a promising therapeutic target for cognitive disfunctions and cancer treatment. Weak toxin from Naja kaouthia venom (WTX) is a non-conventional three-finger neurotoxin, targeting α7-nAChR with weak affinity. There are no data on interaction mode of non-conventional neurotoxins with nAChRs.
