This study focuses on the widely applied technology of direct-fired thermal desorption, taking a site contaminated by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as a typical test case. Personal glucose meter (PGM) is one of the most commercially available POC (point-of-care) devices for monitoring the level of glucose reliably, yet its non-glucose quantification ability is limited since such strategy needs ingenious interface design and tedious enzyme conjugation. Herein, we constructed a portable and sensitive platform that can detect non-glucose target by combining enzyme-encapsulated zeolitic imidazole framework-90 (ZIF-90) with personal glucose meter. ZIF-90 is an ideal carrier and susceptor due to the extraordinary capability of packaging enzyme and stimuli-responsiveness.

The soil moisture regime can affect the release of heavy metals in soil. Metal pollution in urban soils due to smelting and electroplating has become a severe problem in China. In this study, the concentration, chemical fraction, and leaching behavior of typical metals (Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb) in soil samples from ten metallurgical sites were studied. The results show that some of the soils were polluted with Cu and most were heavily polluted with multiple metals, especially Zn, Cd, and Pb.

Environmental health risk of contaminated soil in a typical abandoned industry was analyzed based on the full field investigation according to the site assessment procedure of American Society for Testing and Material (ASTM). Parameters were modified with the combination of Chinese crowd character and site specifics. Results indicated that the site was mainly contaminated with volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds in soil profiles.

Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) film residues left in farmlands due to agricultural activities were extensively investigated to evaluate the present pollution situation by selecting the typical areas with LDPE film application, including Harbin, Baoding, and Handan of China. The survey results demonstrated that the film residues were ubiquitous within the investigated areas and the amount reached 2,400-8,200 g ha(-1). Breakage rates of the film residues were almost at the same level in the studied fields.

The competitive sorption behavior of Cu2+ and propisochlor on humic acids (HA) was investigated using a batch method. The sorption equilibrium time of propisochlor on HA was 12 h when its initial concentration was 4 or 10 mg L(-1). The results showed that the Langmuir model can best describe the sorption behavior of propisochlor on HA.

Three kinds of soils in China, krasnozem, fluvo-aquic soil, and phaeozem, as well as the humic acids (HAs) isolated from them, were used to adsorb the herbicide butachlor from water. Under the experimental conditions, the adsorption amount of butachlor on soils was positively correlated with the content of soil organic matter. HAs extracted from different kinds of soils had different adsorption capacity for the tested herbicide, which was positively correlated with their content of carbonyls.
