Macrophages, a type of functionally diversified immune cell involved in the progression of many physiologies and pathologies, could be mechanically activated. The physical properties of biomaterials including stiffness and topography have been recognized as exerting a considerable influence on macrophage behaviors, such as adhesion, migration, proliferation, and polarization. Recent articles and reviews on the physical and mechanical cues that regulate the macrophage's behavior are available; however, the underlying mechanism still deserves further investigation.
