AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a regulator of cellular energy metabolism. Long-term use of metformin, an AMPK activator, was previously reported to be neuroprotective, as it promotes behavioral improvement and angiogenesis following an acute ischemic injury of the brain.
