  • The COVID-19 pandemic has led to fewer in-person classes, increasing children's screen time and adversely affecting mental health for both kids and parents.
  • A study with 186 parents in South Korea found that children used smartphones an average of 3.52 hours per day, and higher screen time correlated with more behavioral problems.
  • Parental stress was also linked to this relationship, suggesting that both children’s screen habits and parental stress play a role in problematic behaviors during the pandemic.

Article Synopsis
  • ADHD in adolescents is linked to depressive disorders, and there's little research on the safety of using methylphenidate (MPH) with SSRIs together, which this study aims to address.
  • A nationwide study in South Korea compared adolescents treated with MPH alone to those receiving both MPH and SSRIs, focusing on various health outcomes while controlling for other factors.
  • Results indicate that using MPH with SSRIs is generally safe, with a notable finding that fluoxetine is associated with a lower risk of tic disorder compared to escitalopram, but most outcomes showed no significant differences.

Background: As the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has continued for a couple of years, the long-term effects of the pandemic and the subsequent school curriculum modification on the mental health of children and parents need to be investigated. To clarify the changes that can occur during one school year and to predict the risk factors for vulnerable groups, this study identified parameters relative to children's screen time, their problematic behavior, and parental depression.

Methods: A total of 186 participants were analyzed who were parents of elementary schoolchildren in South Korea.

Although considerable evidence has already been collected on the effects of early initiation of drug/alcohol consumption on addictive behaviors in adolescents, little is known about the impact of early exposure to online games during preschool ages on the risk of internet gaming disorder (IGD). We evaluated the effects of exposure to online games before entering elementary school on IGD occurrence during the secondary school years using a community-based longitudinal study. Data from 1,760 adolescents (seventh grade), who were recruited from the iCURE study and followed for 2 years, were analyzed.

  • The study investigates how a mother's smartphone addiction influences the early smartphone exposure of her child, highlighting that family environment plays a significant role in young children's screen use.
  • Using data from the K-CURE study, researchers found that children of mothers with high smartphone addiction are exposed to devices earlier than those with low addiction levels.
  • Surprisingly, the study revealed no significant link between a mother's smartphone addiction and the amount of time their child spends using the smartphone, suggesting that early exposure does not necessarily lead to increased usage.
