Article Synopsis
  • Strawberry plants are prone to various infections, especially from pathogens like the major fungal pathogen causing root rot; however, there is limited knowledge about these threats.
  • This study collected 354 fungal isolates from diseased strawberry roots across 11 locations in southcentral China, revealing significant genetic diversity among populations and the presence of two main genetic clusters.
  • Although some genetic elements were shared among local populations, distinct genetic differences were noted, and human activities may enhance the spread and evolution of new pathogen genotypes.

Article Synopsis
  • A new method was developed to create an efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalyst with low platinum loading, using a PtNi alloy coated on porous nitrogen-doped carbon.
  • The catalyst was extensively analyzed using various techniques, such as XRD and SEM, revealing impressive characteristics.
  • It outperformed the standard commercial catalyst with a lower overpotential of 26 mV, faster HER kinetics, and smaller charge transfer resistance due to the beneficial alloying effect between Pt and Ni.

Article Synopsis
  • Chinese yam is a vital root crop facing significant threats from wilt disease, with limited research on its molecular epidemiology.
  • A study analyzed 117 isolates from wilted yam plants across six regions in South-Central China, identifying 11 different species, with two species being the most prevalent.
  • The findings reveal diverse genetic variations and distribution patterns among the species based on geography and yam variety, which have important implications for managing yam wilt disease.

Pregnanediol-3-glucuronide (PdG) is the major terminal metabolite of progesterone, playing an important role in physiological processes, such as the female menstrual cycle, pregnancy (supports gestation), embryogenesis and maternal immune response of humans and other species. Hence, accurate measurement of PdG in serum/plasma is needed for the evaluation of progesterone production. However, such high-specificity determination of PdG is lacking in clinical sample detection.

β-Hydroxybutyrate (BHB) was proved to be a differential metabolite of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) by semiquantitative analysis, while whether BHB could be used as a potential biomarker for female PTC still needed to be validated. An LC-MS/MS method with surrogate matrix was established to validate serum BHB in specified PTC patients. Serum BHB levels in PTCs were significantly higher than those in HCs.

Profiling of carboxyl-containing metabolites in smokers and non-smokers provides insight into the smoking-related biological events and causal relationships between exposure and adverse events. However, more comprehensive analysis of carboxyl-containing metabolites in bio-matrices with high sensitivity and accuracy is challenging. In this work, stable isotope labeling in combination with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was used for untargeted profiling and relative quantification of carboxyl-containing metabolites in plasma of smokers and non-smokers.
