Kernel row number (KRN) is a major yield related trait for maize (Zea mays L.) and is also a major goal of breeders, as it can increase the number of kernels per plant. Thus, identifying new genetic factors involving in KRN formation may accelerate improving yield-related traits genetically.

Continuous cropping often results in severe "replant problem," across various crops due to the autotoxins accumulation, soil acidification, pathogens proliferation, and microbial dysfunction. We unveiled a groundbreaking phenomenon that long-term continuous cropping (LTCC) can alleviate the tobacco replant problem. This mitigation occurs through the enrichment of autotoxin-degrading microbes, and the transformative impact is evident with even a modest application (10%) of LTCC soil to short-term continuous cropping (STCC) soil.

Multiple distinct specialized regions shape the architecture of maize leaves. Among them, the fringe-like and wedge-shaped auricles alter the angle between the leaf and stalk, which is a key trait in crop plant architecture. As planting density increased, a small leaf angle (LA) was typically selected to promote crop light capture efficiency and yield.

Article Synopsis
  • - Understanding inflorescence development is key for improving crop genetics, as the inflorescence meristems are responsible for producing reproductive organs and influencing grain yield.
  • - This study utilized a technique called Stereo-seq to create a detailed spatial map of maize ear development, identifying 12 different cell types, including 4 newly defined types specifically within the inflorescence meristem.
  • - By further analyzing the cell types, the researchers found three subtypes of meristems and identified important genes that play a role in stem cell function, providing new insights that could aid in enhancing cereal crop yields.

Improving osmotic stress tolerance is critical to help crops to thrive and maintain high yields in adverse environments. Here, we characterized a core subunit of the transport protein particle (TRAPP) complex, ZmBET5L1, in maize using knowledge-driven data mining and genome editing. We found that ZmBET5L1 can interact with TRAPP I complex subunits and act as a tethering factor to mediate vesicle aggregation and targeting from the endoplasmic reticulum to the Golgi apparatus.

The global incidence rate of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is approximately 25%. With the global increase in obesity and its associated metabolic syndromes, NAFLD has become an important cause of chronic liver disease in many countries. Despite recent advances in pathogenesis, diagnosis, and therapeutics, there are still challenges in its treatment.

Maize early endosperm development is initiated in coordination with elimination of maternal nucellar tissues. However, the underlying mechanisms are largely unknown. Here, we characterize a major quantitative trait locus for maize kernel size and weight that encodes an EXPANSIN gene, ZmEXPB15.

TGR5 is emerging as an important and promising target for the treatment of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and obesity. A series of novel 3-phenoxypyrazine-2-carboxamide derivatives were designed, synthesized and evaluated and . The most potent compounds 18g and 18k exhibited excellent hTGR5 agonist activity, which was superior to those of the reference drug INT-777.

The ()-mediated phosphorylation of an adenosine diphosphate ribosylation factor (Arf) GTPase-activating protein (AGAP) forms a key regulatory module for the numbers of spikelets and kernels in the ear inflorescences of maize ( L.). However, the action mechanism of the KNR6-AGAP module remains poorly understood.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers have identified a specific gene in maize, qEL7, that regulates ear length, flower number, and fertility, which are important factors for grain yield.
  • The gene identified encodes for an enzyme involved in ethylene production, influencing developmental processes in maize inflorescences.
  • Gene editing of this gene resulted in reduced ethylene production and increased grain yield, suggesting that manipulating ethylene levels could enhance productivity in maize and similar crops.

Plant meristems are self-renewing groups of pluripotent stem cells that produce lateral organs in a stereotypical pattern. Of interest is how the radially symmetrical meristem produces laminar lateral organs. Both the male and female inflorescence meristems of the dominant () mutant fail to grow as a single point and instead show deep branching.

Enhancers are cis-acting DNA segments with the ability to increase target gene expression. They show high sensitivity to DNase and contain specific DNA elements in an open chromatin state that allows the binding of transcription factors (TFs). While numerous enhancers are annotated in the maize genome, few have been characterized genetically.

Background: Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is one of the leading causes for death in both developed and developing countries and it is the single largest cause of death in the United States, responsible for 1 out of every 6 deaths. The objective of this study was to determine microRNA (miRNA) expression in AMI and determine whether miR-133, miR-1291 and miR-663b could be measured in plasma as a biomarker for recurrence.

Methods: Patients with AMI and those without AMI were retrospectively recruited for a comparison of their plasma miR-133, miR-1291 and miR-663b expression.

Watermelon, Citrullus lanatus, is an important cucurbit crop grown throughout the world. Here we report a high-quality draft genome sequence of the east Asia watermelon cultivar 97103 (2n = 2× = 22) containing 23,440 predicted protein-coding genes. Comparative genomics analysis provided an evolutionary scenario for the origin of the 11 watermelon chromosomes derived from a 7-chromosome paleohexaploid eudicot ancestor.
