Pathogenesis-related proteins (PR), including beta-1,3-glucanases may provide the first line of defense against fungal pathogens. Many PR proteins are activated by salicylic acid (SA), which acts as an endogenous signal. We have previously isolated seven members of the beta-1,3-glucanase gene family in barley (Hordeum vulgare).

We report a new phenomenon, which illustrates that the role of binocular disparity in 3D shape perception critically depends on whether the parts are interpreted as belonging to a single object. The nature of this phenomenon was studied in four experiments. In the first two experiments the subjects were shown a sequence of stereoscopic images of a cube, in which binocular disparity indicated that the individual parts move towards or away from one eye.

Aim: To prepare rabbit anti-Red antisera.

Methods: The bet, exo and gam genes of lambda phage were amplified by PCR from genomic DNA and cloned into the expression vector pDH2, respectively. Red proteins were induced to express at 42 degrees C.

During fermentation, it is often difficult to detect the abnormalities, for example, caused by contamination on-line. Instead, the faults were detected usually by off-line laboratory analysis or other ways, which in most cases, is too late to remedy the situation. In this paper, a simple three-layers BP network was used for the early prediction of the amount of product, based on the difference in prediction errors between normal and abnormal charges and other accessorial information, such as profit function and pH value.

Objective: To observe the effects of fruit juices with different antioxidant capacity on antioxidant system function of aged rats.

Methods: Thirty Wistar rats were randomly divided into three groups: pomegranate juice and apple juice as two experimental groups, while distilled water as normal control group. They were administrated fruit juices or distilled water respectively by gavage daily for 4 weeks.

A promoter of the gene encoding beta-1, 3-glucanase isoenzyme GIII was amplified from barley genomic DNA using PCR. The GIII gene promoter, designated P(GIII), was ligated upstream of the gus report gene and pGIII-gus fusion fragment was then cloned into a binary vector pCAMBIA1300 for Agrobacterium-mediated transformation of rice (Oryza sativa L. cv.

A mutant, aroAM12, exhibiting resistance to glyphosate produced in a previous study using the staggered extension process with aroA genes from Salmonella typhimurium and Eschrichia coli. In this paper, we constructed a vector pGRA1300 carrying aroAM12 gene, comprising transit peptide of Arabidopsis EPSPS, under the control of the CaMV35S promoter and used as selectable marker for cotton plant (Gossypium hirsutum L.) transformation.

With a series of four near-isogenic lines (NIL) of rice, studies were carried out in the interaction between rice and a specific glycoprotein elicitor from Magnaporthe grisea. After treatment with the elicitor, O(-.)(2) generation rate increased more remarkably on the leaves of incompatible interaction of rice, than compatible interaction of rice.

Aim: To explore the action mechanism of antidepressants.

Methods: The PC12 cell proliferation was detected by flow cytometry. The proliferation of hippocampal progenitor cells and level of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) were measured by immunohistochemistry.

Objective: To elucidate the role of S-100B and neuron specific enolase (NSE) in predicting the outcomes of patients with severe head injury.

Methods: Forty patients with severe head injury were included in this study. The serum concentrations of S-100B and NSE were measured within 12 hours after head injury to investigate the correlation between serum levels of S-100B and NSE and outcome.

Aim: To investigated the effects of the SNPs (rs411021, rs436045, rs427811, rs385039 and rs809912) on gene expression and further identify the susceptibility genes of type 2 diabetes.

Methods: Ten allele fragments (49 bp each) were synthesized according to the 5 SNPs mentioned above. These fragments were cloned into luciferase reporter gene vector and then transfected into HepG2 cells.

Glyphosate is a non-selective broad-spectrum herbicide that inhibits 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS), a key enzyme in the aromatic amino acid biosynthetic pathway in microorganisms and plants. We have previously reported a strategy for engineering glyphosate-resistant class I EPSPS based on staggered-PCR technology. Selected mutant enzymes exhibited high K(i)[glyphosate] and low K(m)[PEP] values compared to the parental enzymes from Escherichia coli ( EcaroA) and Salmonella typhimurium ( StaroA).

Objective: To search for the disease-associated haplotype in the PRKCZ gene, a susceptibility gene for type 2 diabetes in Han population of North China, by case-control study and linkage disequilibrium (LD) analysis using single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs).

Methods: SNPs located in the PRKCZ gene were chosen from public SNP domain by bioinformatic methods and single base extension (SBE) method was used to genotype the loci in 173 sporadic type 2 diabetes patients and 152 normal individuals to perform case-control study and LD analysis. Haplotype block were constructed in these populations.

Objective: To study the function of 5 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the PRKCZ gene, a susceptibility gene for type 2 diabetes in Han population of North China, in the pathogenesis of the disease.

Methods: Bioinformatic methods and reporter gene activity determination were used to analyze the function of the 5 SNPs.

Results: The reporter gene activities of different alleles of 2 SNPs, rs427811 and rs809912, were obviously different, which implies that these 2 SNPs might be susceptibility loci of the disease.
