In order to explore the influence of electrode spacing on the performance of the enhanced bioretention system, four bioretention cells with microbial fuel cell (BRC-MFC) systems with different electrode spacing were designed, and the effect of electrode spacing on system performance was revealed by analysing its water treatment capacity and electricity production efficiency. The results showed that BRC-MFC had good water treatment capacity and could produce electricity simultaneously. Compared with other BRC-MFC systems with spacing, the BRC3 system (with an electrode spacing of 30 cm) had significant water treatment capacity under different organic loads, especially under high organic load (C/N = 10) operation, COD removal rate was as high as 98.

Background: Early neointimal hyperplasia of vein graft may be ameliorated via enhancing intravenous surface shear stress. Cellular processes including proliferation, apoptosis and migration of endothelial cells (ECs) and vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) may play very important roles in the process of neointimal hyperplasia of vein graft; and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathways including extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK1/2) and p38 pathways play vital roles in regulating a large variety of cellular processes. This study evaluated the impacts of shear stress and MAPK pathways on cellular processes of ECs in a co-culture system with VSMCs, and aimed to test the hypothesis that high shear stress suppresses proliferation and migration but promotes apoptosis of ECs co-cultured with VSMCs via down-regulating MAPK pathway.

Objective: Postoperative atrial fibrillation is the most frequent complication arising after cardiac surgery, occurring in 40% of cases. The treatment of postoperative atrial fibrillation with epicardial amiodarone/corticosteroid hydrogel delivery can increase efficacy and reduce side effects. To further evaluate whether amiodarone hydrogel is superior to corticosteroid hydrogel or placebo, we performed a randomized prospective study in 150 patients with coronary artery bypass grafting to compare the effectiveness with different epicardial drug approaches in the postoperative period.

Background: Osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture (OVCF) is the most common complication of osteoporosis, however, debate persists over which procedure of percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) or balloon kyphoplasty (BKP) is a better treatment. WASF3 has been shown to be required for invasion and metastasis in different cancer cell types and knockdown of WASF3 leads to suppression of invasion/metastasis. Aberrant signaling through the interleukin 6/Janus kinase (JAK)/signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) axis in cancer cells has emerged as a major mechanism for cancer progression. In this study, we demonstrate that interleukin 6 induces both WASF3 expression and phosphoactivation in breast and prostate cancer cell lines through the JAK2/STAT3 pathway in two different ways.

Inactivation of HSP90 and HSP70 leads to loss of invasion in a variety of cancer cell types, presumably as a result of destabilization of, as yet, undefined clients of these molecular chaperones that influence this phenotype. The WASF3 gene has been shown to be up-regulated in high-grade tumors and its down-regulation leads to loss of invasion and metastasis. WASF3 phosphorylation by ABL kinase is essential for its ability to regulate invasion.

The aim of this study was to explore the relationship and interpret the clinical importance of acute physiology and chronic health evaluation III (APACHE III) and levels of cytokines in patients with systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) with or without cardio-pulmonary bypass (CPB) to see if they are beneficial for evaluating the seriousness of SIRS. The data suggested that the APACHE III score and levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1beta), and soluble interleukin-2 receptor (sIL-2R) were significantly higher after conventional CABG (CCABG) than after off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCAB) (p<0.05).

The aim of the present study was to find a method to increase oral bioavailability of silymarin, that is to say, by the preparation of silymarin proliposome and to compare the pharmacokinetic characteristics and bioavailability after oral administration of silymarin proliposome and silymarin in beagle dogs. Silymarin proliposome was prepared by the film-deposition on carriers. After the proliposome was contacted with water, the silymarin liposome suspensions formed automatically.

A coordinated effort combining bioinformatic tools with high-throughput cell-based screening assays was implemented to identify novel factors involved in T-cell biology. We generated a unique library of cDNAs encoding predicted secreted and transmembrane domain-containing proteins generated by analyzing the Human Genome Sciences cDNA database with a combination of two algorithms that predict signal peptides. Supernatants from mammalian cells transiently transfected with this library were incubated with primary T cells and T-cell lines in several high-throughput assays.

Cisplatin, a widely used anticancer drug, produces significant oto- and nephrotoxicity. Previous data from our laboratory, using cultured cell lines, indicated that cisplatin increases the expression of the adenosine A(1) receptor subtype through generation of reactive oxygen species and activation of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kappa B). Since the adenosine A(1) receptor plays an important role in normal renal physiology, this study was performed to determine whether cisplatin modulates adenosine A(1) receptor expression in vivo and whether these receptors play a role in the nephrotoxicity.
