This study was performed to investigate the impact of pharmaceutical excipients commonly used for lymphatic transport on in vitro drug association with chylomicrons (CM). A CM association study was conducted using saquinavir solubilized in four different pharmaceutical excipients. We observed a linear relationship between saquinavir solubility and drug association, suggesting that the solubility of saquinavir in excipients is a key determinant for successful lymphatic delivery.

This paper presents the development of a non-contact, nonintrusive wrist pulse sensor based on the near-field variation of an array resonator. A compact resonator and its array were designed and fabricated on flexible substrate. The reflection coefficient of the resonator can vary as a function of the distance between the resonator and the walls of the major arteries, and the corresponding variation is utilized to obtain heart rate information at the wrist.

Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), a mosquito-borne flavivirus, is closely related to West Nile (WN), yellow fever (YF), and dengue (DEN) viruses. Its plus-strand genomic RNA carries a single open reading frame encoding a polyprotein that is cleaved into three structural (C, prM/M, and E) and at least seven nonstructural (NS1/NS1', NS2A, NS2B, NS3, NS4A, NS4B, and NS5) proteins, based on previous work with WNV, YFV, and DENV. Here, we aimed to profile experimentally all the viral proteins found in JEV-infected cells.

This paper presents a vital sign detection sensor based on reflection coefficient variance from an antenna used in wireless communication devices. The near-field effect is estimated by performing 3D full-wave simulations using a dipole antenna and the magnitude variation of the reflection coefficient induced by human thorax movement due to heart and lungs is observed. The results support the possibility of vital sign detection based on the magnitude variation of the reflection coefficient from an antenna, which can be explained as a narrowband modulation scheme.

A facile method has been developed for synthesizing polymer nanocapsules and thin films using multiple in-plane stitching of monomers by the formation of reversible disulfide linkages. Owing to the reversibility of the disulfide linkages, the nanostructured materials readily transform their structures in response to environmental changes at room temperature. For example, in reducing environments, the polymer nanocapsules release loaded cargo molecules.

Background: Due to the alarming increase in the incidence of thyroid cancer worldwide, more patients are receiving postoperative radioactive iodine (RAI) therapy and these patients are given a low-iodine diet along with levothyroxine withdrawal to induce a hypothyroid state to maximize the uptake of RAI by thyroid tissues. Recently, the reported cases of patients suffering from life-threatening severe hyponatremia following postoperative RAI therapy have increased. This study aimed to systematically assess risk factors for developing hyponatremia following RAI therapy in post-thyroidectomy patients.

A mathematical model based on the distribution of collagen fibers in ground substance is established to investigate epimysium of skeletal muscle. Under the condition of pinned boundary, incompressible soft biological tissues and the mixed ratio of composite materials, the macro-mechanical properties of the skeletal muscle epimysium are investigated by the proposed model, utilizing the principle of virtual work and the nonlinear theory of elasticity in this study. The effect of physical and geometrical parameters of skeletal muscle epimysium on the stress-strain relationship is also discussed in detail.

A new and more accurate technique is presented for determining the toroidal mode number n of edge-localized modes (ELMs) using two independent electron cyclotron emission imaging (ECEI) systems in the Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) device. The technique involves the measurement of the poloidal spacing between adjacent ELM filaments, and of the pitch angle α* of filaments at the plasma outboard midplane. Equilibrium reconstruction verifies that α* is nearly constant and thus well-defined at the midplane edge.

Place is of critical importance to health as it can reveal patterns of disease spread and clustering, associations with risk factors, and areas with greatest need for, or least access to healthcare services and promotion activities. Furthermore, in order to get a good understanding of the health status and needs of a particular area a broad range of data are required which can often be difficult and time consuming to obtain and collate. This process has been expedited by bringing together multiple data sources and making them available in an online geo-visualisation, HealthTracks, which consists of a mapping and reporting component.

A facile synthesis of highly stable, water-dispersible metal-nanoparticle-decorated polymer nanocapsules (M@CB-PNs: M=Pd, Au, and Pt) was achieved by a simple two-step process employing a polymer nanocapsule (CB-PN) made of cucurbit[6]uril (CB[6]) and metal salts. The CB-PN serves as a versatile platform where various metal nanoparticles with a controlled size can be introduced on the surface and stabilized to prepare new water-dispersible nanostructures useful for many applications. The Pd nanoparticles on CB-PN exhibit high stability and dispersibility in water as well as excellent catalytic activity and recyclability in carbon-carbon and carbon-nitrogen bond-forming reactions in aqueous medium suggesting potential applications as a green catalyst.

Most sensors are based on ceramic or semiconducting substrates, which have no flexibility or biocompatibility. Polymer-based sensors have been the subject of much attention due to their ability to collect molecules on their sensing surface with flexibility. Beyond polymer-based sensors, the recent discovery of cellulose as a smart material paved the way to the use of cellulose paper as a potential candidate for mechanical as well as electronic applications such as actuators and sensors.

Despite the remarkable progress made in the self-assembly of nano- and microscale architectures with well-defined sizes and shapes, a self-organization-based synthesis of hollow toroids has, so far, proved to be elusive. Here, we report the synthesis of polymer microrings made from rectangular, flat and rigid-core monomers with anisotropically predisposed alkene groups, which are crosslinked with each other by dithiol linkers using thiol-ene photopolymerization. The resulting hollow toroidal structures are shape-persistent and mechanically robust in solution.

This Letter reveals for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, the effects of stress-free persistent luminescence (PL) decay on the mechanoluminescence (ML) phenomena and the effects of stresses and strain rates on the PL decay of SrAl(2)O(4):Eu(2+), Dy(3+) (SAOED) materials. Previous research on ML phenomena in this material has focused on the effects of strain rates and stress variations on ML light intensity. However, experimental evidence provided herein shows that the ML light emission is also related to the PL decay time elapsed until the onset of stressing and the PL decay rate is dependent on the stress, strain rate, and the stress-free PL decay time interval.
