Long-chain fatty acids (LCFAs) are not only energy sources but also serve as signaling molecules. GPR120, an LCFA receptor, plays key roles in maintaining metabolic homeostasis. However, whether endogenous ligand-GPR120 circuits exist and how such circuits function in pancreatic islets are unclear.

Along with functionally intact insulin, diabetes-associated insulin peptides are secreted by β cells. By screening the expression and functional characterization of olfactory receptors (ORs) in pancreatic islets, we identified Olfr109 as the receptor that detects insulin peptides. The engagement of one insulin peptide, insB:9-23, with Olfr109 diminished insulin secretion through Gi-cAMP signaling and promoted islet-resident macrophage proliferation through a β cell-macrophage circuit and a β-arrestin-1-mediated CCL2 pathway, as evidenced by β-arrestin-1 mouse models.

Tyrosine phosphorylation of secretion machinery proteins is a crucial regulatory mechanism for exocytosis. However, the participation of protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs) in different exocytosis stages has not been defined. Here we demonstrate that PTP-MEG2 controls multiple steps of catecholamine secretion.

Most hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients are diagnosed at an advanced stage; however, the effect of systemic therapy on advanced HCC remains undetermined. Therefore, new treatment targets must be identified. We analyzed Gene Expression Omnibus datasets from two HCC patient cohorts and found that NT5DC2 was associated with vascular invasion and poor survival.

Tissue regeneration, such as pancreatic islet tissue propagation in vitro, could serve as a promising strategy for diabetes therapy and personalised drug testing. However, such a strategy has not been realised yet. Propagation could be divided into two steps, in vitro expansion and repeated passaging.

: Hilar cholangiocarcinoma (HCCA) is a tumour with high malignancy, low surgical resection potential, and a poor prognosis. Ecotropic Viral Integration site 1 (EVI1) is a transcriptional regulator that has been proven to be associated with tumourigenesis and progression in many human solid tumours. However, the expression of EVI1 and its role in HCCA progression remain unclear.

We reviewed outcomes of 230 flexor tendon repairs in 27 thumbs and 203 fingers in Zone 1 and 2 over 7 years. In 2013, we used a 2-strand modified Kessler method followed by passive motion exercise in repairing flexor digitorum profundus tendon injuries in Zone 2 in 30 fingers; 24 fingers were followed, five (26%) had repair ruptures. Between 2014 and 2017, we used a 4- or 6-strand method to repair 111 flexor digitorum profundus tendons in Zone 2, followed by true early active motion.

We report the outcomes of zone 2 tendon repairs in 60 fingers using a strong core suture, sparse peripheral stitches and early active motion. From January 2014 to April 2016, we repaired 60 flexor digitorum profundus tendons with a tensioned 4-strand or 6-strand core suture and three to four peripheral stitches. The A2 or A4 pulleys were vented as necessary.

BACKGROUND Laparotomy patients are occasionally diagnosed as having incidental periampullary cancers, making emergency pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) inevitable. In this situation is difficult to decide whether to perform an emergency PD or a two-stage PD. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 27 patients who underwent emergency abdominal laparotomy were diagnosed with periampullary or pancreatic cancer during the operation without enough preoperative preparation.

Perihilar cholangiocarcinoma (PHCCA) is the most common type of cholangiocarcinoma with low resection rate and high morbidity. The study of PHCCA biomarkers made progresses slowly compared with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma because of surgical complexity and low possibility of radical surgery, which resulted in the difficulty of specimen obtainment. To screen and identify new biomarkers in PHCCA, we constructed a retrospective cohort with 121 PHCCA patients and a prospective cohort consisting of 64 PHCCA patients, and screened the candidate biomarkers by immunohistochemistry and quantified PCR.

Fibroblast growth factor receptor 2 (FGFR2) was demonstrated to correlate to the progression and prognosis of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) by numerous evidences. However, as a well-recognized suppressor of FGFR2 signalling, the clinical significance of Sprouty (SPRY) family of ICC has not been investigated. In our study, the expressions of SPRY1-4 in 20 pairs of fresh tumour tissues were detected with qPCR, and in 108 cases of paraffin-embedded tissues with immunohistochemistry.

We demonstrate experimentally that a photonic crystal made of Al_{2}O_{3} cylinders exhibits topological time-reversal symmetric electromagnetic propagation, similar to the quantum spin Hall effect in electronic systems. A pseudospin degree of freedom in the electromagnetic system representing different states of orbital angular momentum arises due to a deformation of the photonic crystal from the ideal honeycomb lattice. It serves as the photonic analogue to the electronic Kramers pair.

Interface states in photonic crystals provide efficient approaches to control the flow of light. Photonic Zak phase determines the bulk band properties of photonic crystals, and, by assembling two photonic crystals with different bulk band properties together, deterministic interface states can be realized. By translating each unit cell of a photonic crystal by half the lattice constant, another photonic crystal with identical common gaps but a different Zak phase at each photonic band can be created.

Article Synopsis
  • * The study analyzed RCC tissue from 24 patients, finding that Nrdp1 levels were lower in cancerous tissues compared to normal tissues, while the levels of BRUCE protein were higher.
  • * Experiments showed that increasing Nrdp1 reduced RCC cell viability and promoted apoptosis, whereas reducing Nrdp1 had the opposite effect, indicating that Nrdp1 may help control RCC cell growth and death by targeting BRUCE, making it a potential treatment focus.
