Matured hop bitter acids (MHBA) are oxidation products from bitter components in hops, which are used widely as food materials to add flavor and bitterness in beer production. Our previous study has shown that MHBA induces thermogenesis in brown adipose tissue (BAT) via sympathetic nerves in rodents and reduces body fat in healthy adults. However, it is unclear how MHBA affects the sympathetic nervous system.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study re-examines previous findings that matured hop extract (MHE) can help reduce body fat in overweight individuals, specifically looking at how MHE interacts with physical activity like walking.
  • - Researchers analyzed data from a study involving 200 overweight Japanese participants, examining changes in body fat based on MHE consumption and daily step counts over 12 weeks.
  • - The results indicated a significant relationship between increased walking and reduced visceral fat in participants consuming MHE, suggesting that combining MHE with light exercise could improve fat loss for those struggling with obesity.

Article Synopsis
  • * The study conducted various safety tests, including genotoxicity assays and both acute and subchronic administration in rats, finding no significant harmful effects at high doses.
  • * Overall, the findings suggest that MHE is safe for consumption, with a no-observed-adverse-effect-level (NOAEL) over 3,484 mg/kg/day for males and 4,022 mg/kg/day for females.

Background: Hops are the main components of beer that provide flavor and bitterness. Iso-α-acids, the bitter components of beer, have been reported to reduce body fat in humans, but the bitterness induced by effective doses of iso-α-acids precludes their acceptance as a nutrient. The matured hop bitter acids (MHBA) of oxidized hops appear to have a more pleasant bitterness compared to the sharper bitterness of iso-α-acids.

Obesity is the principal symptom of metabolic syndrome, which refers to a group of risk factors that increase the likelihood of atherosclerosis. In recent decades there has been a sharp rise in the incidence of obesity throughout the developed world. Iso-α-acids, the bitter compounds derived from hops in beer, have been shown to prevent diet-induced obesity by increasing lipid oxidation in the liver and inhibition of lipid absorption from the intestine.
