Retrospective evaluation of the symptom-based work restriction strategy of healthcare providers in the first epidemic of COVID-19 at a tertiary care hospital in Tokyo, Japan.

Background: Effectiveness of restricting healthcare providers (HCPs) from working based on the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-like symptoms should be evaluated.

Methods: A total of 495 HCPs in a tertiary care hospital in Tokyo, Japan, participated in this study between June and July in 2020. Analysis of serum anti-severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) antibody to identify infected HCPs, questionnaire surveys, and medical record reviews were conducted to evaluate the appropriateness of symptom-based work restriction for 10 days.

Severely Decreased Muscle Mass among Older Patients Hospitalized in a Long-Term Care Ward in Japan.

Sarcopenia is known to increase the risk of adverse outcomes, including disability, loss of independence, hospitalization, longer length of hospital stay, and mortality, but there is little data about the prevalence of sarcopenia and the factors associated with increased physical dependency and cognitive decline among older patients hospitalized in a long-term care (LTC) ward in Japan. A cross-sectional study was conducted in 79 consecutive patients (34 men, 45 women) with a median age of 81 y hospitalized in an LTC hospital. Sarcopenia was defined according to the recommended algorithm of the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia.

A 73-year-old woman was diagnosed as having tuberculosis of ileocecum by colonoscopy and started on medication. A month later, she admitted for ileus. Colonoscopy showed improvement of tuberculosis of ileocecum.

A 73-year-old woman without a history of allergic diseases visited our hospital complaining of sore throat and nocturnal cough. Blood tests showed marked eosinophilia (18000/mm(3);WBC 21900/mm(3), Eos 82.0%) with normal serum levels of C-reactive protein, non-specific and various allergen-specific IgE.

[A case of primary duodenal cancer near the papilla of Vater which had initial symptoms of obstructive jaundice].

A 63-year-old man visited our hospital complaining of brown urine. A physical examination showed jaundice of the skin and conjunctiva bulbar. Blood tests showed elevated serum levels of bilirubin and hepatobiliary enzymes.

Successful pregnancies in 2 infertile patients with endometrial adenocarcinoma.

Two infertile patients with well-differentiated endometrial adenocarcinoma succeeded in having their own babies with assisted reproductive technology following treatment with a high dose of medroxyprogesterone acetate and repeated endometrial curettages. Their follow-up pathological examinations revealed no evidence of recurrent disease. Consequently, conservative treatment may be indicated in patients with well-differentiated endometrial adenocarcinoma at an early stage who desire to preserve their fertility.

Sensing of cytoplasmic pH by bacterial chemoreceptors involves the linker region that connects the membrane-spanning and the signal-modulating helices.

The two major chemoreceptors of Escherichia coli, Tsr and Tar, mediate opposite responses to the same changes in cytoplasmic pH (pH(i)). We set out to identify residues involved in pH(i) sensing to gain insight into the general mechanisms of signaling employed by the chemoreceptors. Characterization of various chimeras of Tsr and Tar localized the pH(i)-sensing region to Arg(259)-His(267) of Tar and Gly(261)-Asp(269) of Tsr.
