Introduction: Since the response of patients with rectal cancer (RC) to neoadjuvant therapy is highly variable, there is an urgent need to develop accurate methods to predict the post-treatment T (pT) stage. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the utility of multi-parametric MRI radiomics models and identify the most accurate machine learning (ML) algorithms for predicting pT stage of RC.

Method: This retrospective study analyzed pretreatment clinical features of 171 RC patients who underwent 3 T MRI prior to neoadjuvant therapy and subsequent total mesorectal excision.

Methods for evaluation of immobilized-small molecule-binding aptamers are rare. In this study, taking the evaluation of 17β-Estradiol (E2) aptamers as an example, we first summarized the reported affinity and specificity results of 16 E2 aptamers, highlighting the issues of insufficient and inconsistent results and the lacking of evaluation of immobilized aptamers. We further exemplified the limited application scope of current affinity techniques by testing the two most widely-applied E2 aptamers, Kim76 and Alsa35, using the three label-free fluorescence assays and two nuclease protection assays.

Background: Several systematic reviews (SRs) and meta-analyses (MAs) have explored the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS), but findings are inconsistent and vary in quality. Therefore, this overview aims to evaluate these SRs and MAs critically, synthesizing existing evidence on acupuncture in treating CTS.

Methods: We searched 7 databases from their inception to April 25, 2024, using the keywords "acupuncture", "carpal tunnel syndrome", and "systematic review".

Background: Coptidis Rhizoma, a classic bitter traditional Chinese medicine, can lead to digestive dysfunction when long-term use according to traditional experience. Bitter taste receptors have been found to regulate gastrointestinal smooth muscle contraction. Coptidis Rhizoma alkaloids are potential agonists for bitter taste receptors, but whether they can induce gastrointestinal dysfunction via bitter taste receptors is not clear.

Light-irradiated pure spin current has been achieved via several methods. In this work, we aim to realize its superposition law by reducing the quantum interference effect between parallel circuits via first principles. As an example, a single-layer zigzag graphene nanoribbon (ZGNR) and a two-layer ZGNR constituted two-probe structures are chosen as our model.

Article Synopsis
  • Ischemic stroke and reperfusion injuries cause neuronal damage due to increased oxidative stress, leading to high levels of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS and RNS).
  • Monitoring transient releases of ROS and RNS is important for understanding cell damage and developing neuroprotective strategies.
  • The study found that mild hypothermic treatment, combined with antioxidants, can reduce oxidative stress and improve cell survival following oxygen glucose deprivation, indicating potential therapies for ischemic stroke.

Gray leaf spot, northern leaf blight and southern leaf blight are three of the most destructive foliar diseases affecting maize (Zea mays L.). Here we identified a gene, ZmCPK39, that encodes a calcium-dependent protein kinase and negatively regulates quantitative resistance to these three diseases.

Objectives: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a leading cause of lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI). However, few comprehensive descriptions of the disease burden, medical resource utilization (MRU), and costs of RSV are available for China. This study aimed to provide the basis for the development of RSV prevention strategies by analyzing the burden of RSV among inpatients with lower respiratory tract infection under 5 years of age.

Unlabelled: Plant height is an important agronomic trait that affects high-density tolerance and lodging resistance. However, the regulators and their underlying molecular mechanisms controlling plant height in maize remain understudied. Here, we report that knockout mutants of the calcium-dependent protein kinase gene (-KO) exhibit dramatically reduced plant height, characterized by shorter internodes and a slight decrease in node numbers.

Sepsis-induced acute lung injury (ALI) is a major cause of death among patients with sepsis in intensive care units. By analyzing a model of sepsis-induced ALI using lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and cecal ligation and puncture (CLP), treatment methods and strategies to protect against ALI were discussed, which could provide an experimental basis for the clinical treatment of sepsis-induced ALI. Recent studies have found that an imbalance in autophagy, ferroptosis, and pyroptosis is a key mechanism that triggers sepsis-induced ALI, and regulating these death mechanisms can improve lung injuries caused by LPS or CLP.

Bovine leukemia virus (BLV) is prevalent worldwide, causing serious problems in the cattle industry. The BLV proviral load (PVL) is a useful index for estimating disease progression and transmission risk. We previously developed a quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) assay to measure the PVL using the coordination of common motif (CoCoMo) degenerate primers.
