Hadal zones account for the deepest 45% of oceanic depth range and play an important role in ocean biogeochemical cycles. As the least-explored aquatic habitat on earth, further investigation is still required to fully elucidate the microbial taxonomy, ecological significance, metabolic diversity, and adaptation in hadal environments. In this study, a novel strain Lsc_1132 was isolated from sediment of the Mariana Trench at 10,954 m in depth.

Owing to their quantum size, edge effects, and abundant surface functional groups, carbon dots (CDs) have attracted significant attention. In this study, chitin-derived carbon dots (CT-CDs) were prepared and used to synthesize MoS/CT-CDs. The abundant functional groups on the surface of the CT-CDs facilitated the orderly arrangement of MoS nanosheets, resulting in a hydrangea-like structure.

Article Synopsis
  • Recent studies indicate that alkanes are prevalent in the hadal zone, potentially providing essential nutrients for microorganisms in these extreme environments.
  • A piezotolerant bacterium, strain C2-1, was isolated from Mariana Trench sediment and can grow at low temperatures and high pressures, using alkanes as its only carbon source.
  • Metagenomic analysis reveals that related strains are widely distributed in various marine environments and have genes that allow them to degrade hydrocarbons and organic matter, contributing significantly to marine ecosystems.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a chronic progressive interstitial lung disease with unknown etiology, high mortality and limited treatment options. It is characterized by myofibroblast proliferation and extensive deposition of extracellular matrix (ECM), which will lead to fibrous proliferation and the destruction of lung structure. Transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) is widely recognized as a central pathway of pulmonary fibrosis, and the suppression of TGF-β1 or the TGF-β1-regulated signaling pathway may thus offer potential antifibrotic therapies.

A Gram-stain-negative, non-motile and rod-shaped bacterium, designated as strain W52, was isolated from deep seawater of the Mariana Trench and characterized phylogenetically and phenotypically. The strain could grow at 10-47 °C (optimum 32 °C), at pH 5.0-8.

Background: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a chronic, progressive and fatal interstitial lung disease with high mortality and limited treatment. Only two drugs are currently approved for the treatment of IPF, but both have limitations and neither drug could prolong survival time of patients. The etiology of IPF is unclear, but there is growing evidence that B cells and B cell receptor signaling play important roles in the pathogenesis of IPF.

A novel marine Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped bacterium, designated as strain PS1, was isolated from the deep-sea sediments of the Mariana Trench and characterized phylogenetically and phenotypically. Bacterial optimal growth occurred at 35 °C (ranging 10-45 °C), pH 6 (ranging pH 5-10) and with 11% (w/v) NaCl (ranging 0-17%). The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity results revealed that strain PS1 was most closely related to Pseudomonas stutzeri ATCC 17588, Pseudomonas nitrititolerans GL14, Pseudomonas zhaodongensis NEAU-ST5-21, Pseudomonas xanthomarina DSM 18231 and Pseudomonas kunmingensis HL22-2 with 98.

Unlabelled: NBT06E8 is a Gram-stain-negative, moderately halophilic, piezotolerant, HO and heavy metal-resistant bacterium, isolated from a deep-sea sediment sample collected from the New Britain Trench at depth of 8900 m. Growth of the strain was observed at 4-45 °C (optimum 30 °C), at pH 5-11 (optimum 8-9) and in 0.5-21% (w/v) NaCl (optimum 3-7%).

Acute lung injury (ALI) is a disease characterized by pulmonary diffusion dysfunction and its exacerbation stage is acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), which may develop to multiple organ failure and seriously threatens human health. ALI has high mortality rates and few effective treatments, thus effective protection measures for ALI are becoming increasingly important. Macrophages play a key regulatory role in the pathogenesis of ALI, and the degree of macrophage polarization is closely related to the severity and prognosis of ALI.

A Gram-stain-negative bacterial strain, designated as E165, was isolated from a tidal flat sediment of the East China Sea. Strain E165 grew optimally at pH 6, at 32 °C and with 1-2 % (w/v) NaCl. The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity results revealed that strain E165 was most closely related to IVIA-Po-145, CK13, IVIA-Po-155, HDW-15, 46-16, B20-1 and DSL-35 with values of 97.

Background: The deep sea harbors the majority of the microbial biomass in the ocean and is a key site for organic matter (OM) remineralization and storage in the biosphere. Microbial metabolism in the deep ocean is greatly controlled by the generally depleted but periodically fluctuating supply of OM. Currently, little is known about metabolic potentials of dominant deep-sea microbes to cope with the variable OM inputs, especially for those living in the hadal trenches-the deepest part of the ocean.

The lung, as the primary organ for gas exchange in mammals, is the main target organ for many pathogens and allergens, which may cause acute lung injury. A certain proportion of acute lung injury may progress into irreversible pulmonary fibrosis. Both acute lung injury and pulmonary fibrosis have high mortality rates and few effective treatments.
