Objectives: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is composed of a heterogeneous group of disorders marked by increased pulmonary artery resistance leading to right heart failure, with high mortality. Evidence is increasing to propose that inflammation plays a significant role in the pathophysiological mechanism. Increased prevalence of PH in patients with systemic inflammatory diseases is already known.

New inflammatory predictors for non-valvular atrial fibrillation: echocardiographic epicardial fat thickness and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio.

The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship of echocardiographic epicardial fat thickness (EFT) and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) with different types of non-valvular atrial fibrillation (AF) in a clinical setting. Purpose: Surgical equipment used in breast cancer surgery that affects wound healing and minimizes complications seems to be a popular investigation topic. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of plasmakinetic cautery on wound healing in patients receiving mastectomy.

Methods: Forty-six consecutive breast cancer patients receiving modified radical mastectomy were evaluated prospectively.

Comparison of outcomes of standard and oncoplastic breast-conserving surgery.

Purpose: The aim of this study is to determine and to compare the oncological outcomes of bilateral reduction mammoplasty to standard breast-conserving surgery for breast cancer.

Methods: One hundred sixty-two patients who received a quadrantectomy because of breast cancer (group 1) and 106 breast cancer patients with macromastia who underwent breast-conserving surgery via bilateral reduction mammoplasty (group 2) between 2003 and 2010 were enrolled in this study.

Results: The mean follow-up time was 37 months for group 1 and 33 months for group 2.

Subdural haematoma as a rare complication of cochlear implantation: case report and literature review.

Objective: To report a case of subdural haematoma occurring as an extremely rare and life-threatening complication of cochlear implantation, and to explore the causative association between intracranial haemorrhage and cochlear implantation surgical techniques. This association has not previously been reviewed in depth.

Case Report: A three-year-old boy was diagnosed with a large subdural haematoma, one week after cochlear implantation.

The role of cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway in acetic acid-induced colonic inflammation in the rat.

The "cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway" provides neurological modulation of cytokine synthesis to limit the magnitude of the immune response. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway on the extent of tissue integrity, oxidant-antioxidant status and neutrophil infiltration to the inflamed organ in a rat model of acetic acid-induced colitis. Colitis was induced by intrarectal administration of 5% acetic acid (1ml) to Sprague-Dawley rats (200-250g; n=7-8 per group).

Relation of epicardial fat thickness and brachial flow-mediated vasodilation with coronary artery disease.

Objective: The purpose of this study is to investigate the presence of a statistical association between epicardial fat thickness (EFT) and coronary artery disease (CAD) and between flow-mediated vasodilation (FMD) and CAD.

Methods: We measured the EFT and FMD in 64 subjects with suspected stable angina pectoris. The patients were separated into two groups according to their coronary angiography results: 34 patients with CAD and 30 patients with normal coronary arteries (NCA).

Obstetric outcomes and prognostic factors of lupus pregnancies.

Purpose: To determine maternal and fetal outcomes in pregnancies with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), and to evaluate the prognostic factors that may affect obstetrical outcomes.

Methods: Sixty-five consecutive cases of SLE and pregnancy were included in this retrospective clinical study, performed in a university hospital which is also a reference center for SLE. Lupus pregnancies followed and delivered during the period from 2002 to 2011 in our department are evaluated.

Epidemiology, anticoagulant treatment and risk of thromboembolism in patients with valvular atrial fibrillation: Results from Atrial Fibrillation in Turkey: Epidemiologic Registry (AFTER).

Background: The aim of this study was to perform a multicenter, prospective investigation regarding the epidemiology, the current effectiveness of therapeutic anticoagulation, and the risk of thromboembolism in patients with valvular atrial fibrillation (AF) based on the records of the Atrial Fibrillation in Turkey: Epidemiologic Registry (AFTER) study.

Methods: Patients were selected from a total of 2,242 consecutive admissions that presented with AF diagnosed via electrocardiogram. Those diagnosed with non-valvular AF were excluded from the AFTER study population, which left 497 patients with valvular AF for analysis.

Predictors of mortality in patients with prosthetic valve infective endocarditis: a nation-wide multicenter study.

Background: Our aim was to investigate the clinical and prognostic features of the patients with prosthetic valve endocarditis (PVE) in a multicenter nation-wide study.

Methods: The present nation-wide study consisted of 75 consecutive patients with PVE treated at 13 major hospitals in Turkey from 2005 to 2012.

Results: The patients who died during follow-up were significantly older than the survivors and had higher C-reactive protein (CRP), creatinine, poor NYHA functional class and large vegetations.

Do Nuss bars compromise the blood flow of the internal mammary arteries?

Objectives: Minimally invasive repair of pectus excavatum, the so-called Nuss procedure, has become a popular technique in recent years. The internal mammary arteries (IMAs) lie on the posterolateral surface of the sternum, and the Nuss bar is likely to obstruct the blood flow in these arteries. This obstruction could become important in the later stages of the lives of these young people if they were to require coronary artery bypass grafting.

Decreased ovarian reserve in female Sprague-Dawley rats induced by isotretinoin (retinoic acid) exposure.

Isotretinoin is a retinoid widely used for the treatment of severe nodulocystic acne. Although it has broad side effects, there is no well-designed study about its effects on the ovary. This study investigated possible toxic effects of isotretinoin on female gonads.

Thoracic primitive neuroectodermal tumor: an unusual case and literature review.

We describe herein a rare case of a primary primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) in the mediastinum of a 75-year-old man. Grossly, the tumor was located in the left upper anterior mediastinum. Transcutaneous fine-needle biopsy (TCNB) revealed small round-cell proliferation.

Removal of bisphenol A (BPA) from water by various nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) membranes.

The removal of an endocrine disrupting compound, bisphenol A (BPA), from model solutions by selected nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) membranes was studied. The commercially available membranes NF 90, NF 270, XLE BWRO, BW 30 (Dow FilmTech), CE BWRO and AD SWRO (GE Osmonics) were used to compare their performances for BPA removal. The water permeability coefficients, rejection of BPA and permeate flux values were calculated for all membranes used.

Pulmonary endarterectomy for chronic thrombo-embolic pulmonary hypertension: an institutional experience.

Objective: Pulmonary endarterectomy (PEA) is the treatment of choice for patients with chronic thrombo-embolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH). The aim of this study was to review our initial experience since the implementation of our program.
