Article Synopsis
  • Ideal partner preferences shape key insights in human mating research, but recent studies face issues such as inconsistent analysis methods and varying findings across different populations.
  • A large-scale study involving 10,358 participants from 43 countries revealed significant effects of preference matching, particularly when analyzing traits collectively, with some traits showing minimal impact on partner evaluations.
  • The research also highlighted gender differences, where both men and women misjudged the importance of traits like attractiveness and earning potential in their stated preferences compared to actual revealed preferences.

Article Synopsis
  • This study examined the effectiveness and reliability of study preregistration in psychology by analyzing 300 research studies to see how closely they followed their preregistered plans.
  • The findings revealed that many preregistrations lacked essential methodological details and frequently deviated from their original plans, which suggests that research biases are still possible.
  • To enhance the accuracy and utility of preregistration, the authors recommend improved training for researchers, more detailed registration templates, and better transparency in reporting deviations.

Casasanto (Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, 138, 351-367, 2009) conceptualised the body-specificity hypothesis by empirically finding that right-handed people tend to associate a positive valence with the right side and a negative valence with the left side, whilst left-handed people tend to associate a positive valence with the left side and negative valence with the right side. Thus, this was the first paper that showed a body-specific space-valence mapping. These highly influential findings led to a substantial body of research and follow-up studies, which could confirm the original findings on a conceptual level.

Article Synopsis
  • - Peliosis hepatis (PH) is a rare, benign liver condition marked by dilated sinusoidal blood-filled spaces, often discovered incidentally and can mimic more severe liver diseases like cancer or abscesses.
  • - A 73-year-old woman with recurrent tongue cancer and multiple myeloma was found to have PH after advanced imaging techniques identified the condition prior to biopsy confirmation.
  • - Following the cessation of raloxifene hydrochloride, a possible drug-linked cause of PH, follow-up imaging showed a reduction in PH lesions five months later.

It has been reported that strong discomfort associated with clusters of circles and holes (trypophobia), including lotus pod seeds, manifests in individuals as young as 4 or 5 years old. This study investigated how the size and number of circles within clusters affected discomfort levels in adults and in children aged 4-9 years. In Experiment 1, we confirmed that the remote experimental procedure could evoke discomfort when participants were presented with cluster images.

Lithium (Li) metal negative electrodes have attracted wide attention for high-energy-density batteries. However, their low coulombic efficiency (CE) due to parasitic electrolyte reduction has been an alarming concern. Concentrated electrolytes are one of the promising concepts that can stabilize the Li metal/electrolyte interface, thus increasing the CE; however, its mechanism has remained controversial.

Background: Endometriosis-associated ovarian cancer (EAOC) is a well-known type of cancer that arises from ovarian endometrioma (OE). OE contains iron-rich fluid in its cysts due to repeated hemorrhages in the ovaries. However, distinguishing between benign and malignant tumors can be challenging.

Tissue factor pathway inhibitor-2 (TFPI2) is a tumor marker for diagnosing ovarian cancer and ovarian clear cell carcinoma (OCCC); however, its effectiveness as a prognostic marker remains unclear. The present study aimed to investigate the utility of TFPI2 as a prognostic marker for ovarian cancer. A total of 256 cases of ovarian cancer was collected at Nara Medical University (Kashihara, Japan) from January 2008 to January 2022.

Myoclonus-dystonia syndrome (MDS) presents with both rapid myoclonus and dystonia, which is caused by mutations in the sarcoglycan (SGCE) gene. However, its complications and management remain unclear. Here, we report a case involving a girl with MDS due to a 7q21.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated how muscle and tendon stiffness in the thighs and lower legs changes during the early follicular and early luteal phases of the menstrual cycle in 15 female university students.
  • Using various methods to track hormonal changes, researchers measured muscle-tendon stiffness with a digital palpation device at specific locations.
  • Results indicated no significant differences in stiffness across the menstrual phases, but found strong correlations between the stiffness of the rectus femoris and patellar tendon, as well as between the vastus medialis and patellar tendon during the early luteal phase.

Scientists write research articles, process ethics reviews, evaluate proposals and research, and seek funding. Several strategies have been proposed to optimize these operations and to decentralize access to research resources and opportunities. For instance, we previously proposed the trinity review method, combining registered reports with financing and research ethics assessments.

Background: Uterine leiomyomas are common for reproductive-aged women and affect women's quality of life due to heavy menstrual bleeding or dysmenorrhea. Leiomyomas grow according to estradiol exposure and decrease after post-menopause. In case serious symptoms are caused by leiomyomas, pharmacotherapy or surgical treatment is proposed.

An earlier study suggested that individuals tend to be more dishonest in darker environments, this phenomenon was attributed to an increase in participants' perceived anonymity. However, instead of using quantifiable measurements, the original experiment depended on the experimenter's subjective observation to construct different brightness conditions, which led to a less precise understanding of the phenomenon. Additionally, the task used in the original experiment has recently been criticized as being unsuitable for dishonesty-detection studies.

Scientific evidence regularly guides policy decisions, with behavioural science increasingly part of this process. In April 2020, an influential paper proposed 19 policy recommendations ('claims') detailing how evidence from behavioural science could contribute to efforts to reduce impacts and end the COVID-19 pandemic. Here we assess 747 pandemic-related research articles that empirically investigated those claims.

Article Synopsis
  • This study focused on Pseudohypoparathyroidism type 1B (PHP1B) and its various causes linked to methylation defects on the GNAS locus, aiming to clarify clinical characteristics within different patient groups.
  • Researchers analyzed 84 patients, categorizing them into five groups based on their methylation patterns and inheritance types, looking at symptoms and ages at diagnosis.
  • Results showed that the sporadic PHP1B group had younger patients and distinct symptoms compared to others, and while neurodevelopmental disorders were noted, no clear links were found between methylation ratios and hormone levels.

Li-mediated ammonia synthesis is, thus far, the only electrochemical method for heterogeneous decentralized ammonia production. The unique selectivity of the solid electrode provides an alternative to one of the largest heterogeneous thermal catalytic processes. However, it is burdened with intrinsic energy losses, operating at a Li plating potential.

Advanced endometrial cancer (EC) often recurs and has a poor prognosis. Various serum markers have been used for EC but their usefulness as biomarkers is still unclear; therefore, identifying new biomarkers is important. The present study aimed to investigate whether the tissue factor pathway inhibitor-2 (TFPI2) level was elevated in the preoperative serum of patients with EC and if it may be a prognostic factor.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of the participant's attention target during repetitive passive movement (RPM) intervention on reciprocal inhibition (RI) and joint movement function. Twenty healthy adults participated in two experiments involving four attention conditions [control (forward attention with no RPM), forward attention (during RPM), monitor attention (monitor counting task during RPM), ankle joint attention (ankle movement counting task during RPM)] during 10-min RPM interventions on the ankle joint. Counting tasks were included to ensure the participant's attention remained on the target during the intervention.

We propose a type of DOI-based manuscript, the author expression of concern (AEOC), allowing authors to formally publish their concerns about legitimate procedural problems associated with editors, reviewers, journals or publishers. Managed by a neutral third-party arbitrator or moderator, AEOCs would be limited in size and subjected to fair but strict screening of presented evidence. When an AEOC is approved for publication by an arbitrator, the criticized party would also need to formally respond within a reasonable period, as a "letter to the author(s)", which is also screened by the same arbitrator.
